Plastic fantastic full-frame lens...

I like this lens for high-speed pictures of pets and people. The fact that it is 85mm give you some working room. It is amazingly light and flat. When I do the 1/1000 and higher shots, its f/2.8 nature blurs the background very nicely. It is no zoom, but I have sold my old Sigma 70-210 f/2.8 because of these advantages. It also focuses silently and has a nice AF/MF switch for MF situations.

'Plastic Fantastic' = Cosina AF 100mm F/3.5 MC Macro

From the known lens nicknames, the 'plastic fantastic' is the Cosina AF 100mm F/3.5 MC Macro or any one of it's variant brand names which are:

Vivitar, Soligor, Phoenix, Promaster, Pentax, Voightlander, Vitacon, Voightlander (Macro-Dynar)

It may seem trivial, but there's only one lens model that's called the 'plastic fantastic' and the SAL85F28 isn't it.  The same also applies to the Minolta AF 70-210/4 Macro 'Beercan', Minolta AF 35-70/4 Macro 'Mini Beercan' and Minolta AF 28-135 Macro 'Secret Handshake' to name just a few.

Sorry, there isnt one 'plastic fantastic', it is just a term used for cheap plastic lenses that perform really well. Just like 'pocket rocket' etc. The 85mm f2.8 definitely fits the term 'plastic fantastic'.

The plastic fantastic name should be retired.  Its used for too many things.

I'd disagree - the Cosina/Vivitar 100mm F3.5 is the lens that traditionally holds the title. Not just because it is plastic but because the construction and feel was particularly cheap.

But it's optical quality is superb as opposed to it's cheap and cheerful build, hence the nickname 'plastic fantastic' and there is only one.

There is NOT only one, just one that you know about. It is actually a very common term, the 85mm f2.8 suits it plenty (as do ALL the easy choice lenses).

There is no truth to find in this dispute, only opinion.

Agree to disagree and call it a day.
