Hi buffalo55.
I assume you are from the USA.
The CD's that came with your camera would probably be older/outdated software.
To get the most up to date software for your Canon EOS xt for free google for canon usa and on the home page go to bottom of page click - Support and Drivers - Consumer & Home Office, the tab says 'Drivers and Software'. 'Enter your Model Name' type in EOS and from there you will get a list to choose from, yours is under 'more choices' click on your camera and then click 'GO' all you need to do now is choose your computer operating system and all your related latest software/firmware updates will be available to download.
Unfortunately it's a bit more complicated any package with the word update or updater requires the original package to be installed before it will run (this covers all the useful tools such as DPP etc.).
However if you choose a Rebel XS 18-55 IS kit from the list, one of the options it offers (providing you select Windows 7 as your operating system) is "EOS Digital Solutions Disk Software 29.1A for Windows (For users who cannot use the bundled CD)" which will install all the required packages. The drawback is that you need to enter your serial no. in order to download it (also it reasonably large at 117MB). you could try entering your XT serial number to see if the support site will allow you to download the software. If that doesn't work try contacting Canon support to see if they can help.
Failing that see if you can find a local camera club, someone there is bound to have a disk they could lend you. It doesn't have to be for an XT any "EOS Digital Solutions Disk" will get you started.
Hope this helps
