EOS Rebel T5i is stuck on video

I am new to photography.  I can't seem to get out of the video mode.  When I toggle the power switch (the one labeled video/on/off), from video to on, nothing changes.  I believe it should go to a picture taking mode when I do this.  As a result, I can't take any photos (I appear to be stuck in the video mode).  Sorry for the lame question, but I am stuck.  Thanks so much.

Are you in live view?

Hi Craig Severance,

If you havn't already done so, turn off the camera remove the battery, turn power on without battery installed, press the shutter button once it wont fire but should discharge remaining power in camera.

Turn power off, reinstall battery, turn power switch to on (not fully to video/live view) and see if that cures it.

Worked for me when my 700D locked up whilst taking photos.

Hi there, did u find a solution? Mine t5i today also get stuck in video mode after shooting at the beach. The on off video switch seems like no responding when rotating it. Take off the battery and when put back on, the camera came on automatically in video mode even if the knob is off?

If your camera locks up in video mode or live view mode to the point where even switching it off does nothing and you have to pull the battery, upgrade the firmware. Both the T4i/T5i had this bug when one of the STM lenses was used in certain situations. The new firmware fixed the issue for me.

Hi Tauleo,

I'm happy to be of help, one consolation is that it only ever happened that once.

Good Luck.

I don't have an answer, but my T5i has just developed the same problem. The camera is always in video mode whether the power switch is Off, On, or Video. I've twisted and turned the power switch and blown compressed air into it to no avail. What a pain.

Try to get the battery out.

Charge the battery and return it to the camera.

Re: EOS Rebel T5i is stuck on video

I have a 77D and am having the SAME issue. When I plug it into my computer and the EOS software starts; I cannot even update the firmware because it will not do it in video mode. I have removed battery, memory card, tried all different things; played with the little tiny switch where the battery pack opens....nothing :/ This happened instantly when I put a new Sigma 18-35mm Art lens on the camera. So looks like I will be returning the lens (because I can’t risk this again)  and have no working camera - any help with this issue - specifically how to update firmware while in video mode - is appreciated!!
