A day out with the Sigma 150-600 s (what a great lens!!)
9

Yesterday I went out with my Nikon d750 and Sigma 150-600. Partly cloudy but with much light it was a beautiful day. I have attached some pictures to show what the Sigma is capable off. I very fine lens.

Indeed, beautiful pictures, razor sharp. Do you also have examples at the long end? And what is your experience about other aspects like handling, especially: what about weight, how does it feel in practice? (I'm expecting my Sigma soon, but still have doubts, why not the Tamron (lighter, cheaper and almost as good)

Thanks for your reply,

Ton

Good images.

The fox looks to be in very good condition; was he as tame as the focal length suggests?

Pity that the fox is such a "misunderstood" species. I've seen that they can be almost domesticated, but they always retain a certain wariness.

Hi, Some more examples also from the long(er) end. The lens itself feels like it is built to last. Heavy, but like a Pro lens. At 600mm it takes practice to use it handheld and enough light. I have a monopod with me but haven't used it yet. I have a good backpack with me so I can carry it around all day.

A have also used the Tamron, but I ended up buying the Sigma. Because the thought of the Sigma being (slightly) better then the Tamron would get to me in the end. The Tamron was a very fine lens though.

It really is a great lens. I did do some MFT with the usb dock but I ended up resetting it and using mft in camera. I guess it really takes time to MFT the lens itself with the usb dock.

The fox is in good condition and is not affraid of people. Not really tame (cause foxes aren't I guess)

Well, it took awhile, but it appears that the Sigma has finally worked its way into the hands of someone capable of producing good images. I was tiring of the all-talk, no-show crowd hitherto "propagandizing" the lens.

Thanks for the shots!

This is what I ended up with for the dock.

Have a look at my other thread to see how I came up with these figures. It made a HUGE difference.

It sure doesn't look like you need to mess with it to me. Nice shots. : )  I have the dock also, but just set my 7d to +3 and my 1dsii looks right on. This is less adjustment than any of the canon long lenses I've used on that body which surprised me after what gets posted on the web about third party lenses.

What was your setup to test it. What kind of testobject did you use?

Re: A day out with the Sigma 150-600 s (what a great lens!!)

I used Focal to align it, and the Focal targets in 3 sizes. With the USB dock each 2 units on the USB dock is equal to 1 unit on the D800 MFT scale.

I set the targets up at the distances and zoom ranges that the dock has points available. Then MFT'd using the in camera adjustments, tabulated them, doubled the readings and wrote them into the dock all in one go. Then reset the camera to 0.

Doing them one by one in the dock would take forever as you would have to unscrew it each time you wrote to it. This is way quicker.

I checked many adjustments after using the USB dock and they are spot on. Now the camera is sitting at 0 for every focal length and distance. Took me about 8 hours to complete.

Results are now much better than out of the box. 600mm results before where just OK, now they are fantastic.

To me these look a lot sharper than the first set above.  Very encouraging considering the D750 is not known for being extremely sharp.  I'd love to see some birds.

Re: A day out with the Sigma 150-600 s (what a great lens!!)

I have Focal Plus, Seems to work quite well.

I have no interest in extra stuff the pro version does. I preferred to save the money.

Just saw that they say that the plus version isn't good for lenses over 400mm. I have sent them an email to find out what the deal is. Seemed to work OK for me.
