20-50 Focus Ring?

Good light has come and I've start fitting my 20-50 instead of the 18-55. I really love this lens, both handling and IQ.

I noticed that i can use the rotating element as a focus ring, but i dont think it was mad with this usage, so i wonder if someone else is using that way and if you think that it would damage the lens.

It has always worked that way (the clue is in the manual under "Manual focus) so no, it will not damage your lens.

If you mean rotating front element, yes, I don't think it was made to withstands such forces in regular use, I would not do it too much (the problem is likely uneven twisting by hand) . You can accomplish the same thing by activating DMF option and half pressing the shutter and then fine tuning the focus with proper focus ring.

Found the manual online... Seems clear that the rotating element ia not made to be used as a focus ring.

We must be talking about 2 different things then. I assumed that you meant the ring next to the zoom ring which is the focus ring.

As Otto K said, you can focus manually by half pressing the shutter and turn the focus ring and you will get a magnified image and focus peaking.  Why anyone would want to focus using the small front ring is a mystery to me.
