Skateboard action with NX1100
3

Sunday i was at the skatepark with the NX and putted it on test in a (for me) new field.

First i tried the 30fps mode but i dont like the fact that the number of shots is fixed. Also 30 fps is not needed. 8fps acted far better and make me discover that 3 fps is way not enough to catch the right moment. So, i was pretty happy when shoting a single trick, but i struggled to get the next trick in many sequences since the camera goes busy saving the first rifle. I excluded RAW to get some benefit there. I also tried lowering jpg quality but this does not seems to help. I am using a class 10 SD.

Any suggestion on how to reduce as much as is possible the processing time? There is something i can disable?

(I was using 18-55, but since i felt like OIS is not needed next time i will try 20-50)

Re: Skateboard action with NX1100

Mediocre shot-to-shot / burst performance is a weak spot of NX1000/1100. NX20, which belongs to the same generation as NX1000/1100, reportedly offers somewhat bigger buffer, but I wouldn't expect a material change with upgrade. I believe that this boils down to data write speed which seems to be capped by the camera.

The only solution now is to upgrade to NX30 (which only solves the issue to some extent - the bursts will definitely be longer than NX1100 can offer) or NX1 (which reportedly is only outclassed by top action DSLRs).

I personally hope that this issue will be rectified by the upcoming NX500...

I dont think this statement is correct: burst performance is very good in NX1100. 8fps is quite a good number. Consider Nikon d3300 has a 5fps burst.

I also dont think that is a buffer size problem. It is more the way the Samsung buffer works. Many Dslr fill the buffer and then slow down operation letting you shoot again as soon as there is enough space to write a new image in the buffer. With my Sony a200 i can shoot 3fps/jpeg almost indefinitely (small files and slow fps). When the samsung buffer is full you would not be able to shot until it is totally empty again. I think that it is due to the fact that the Drime imaging processor do it all and can't do it at the same time...

I would expect the buffer to empty faster if i shot in lower quality and this does not seems to appen so i may think that the buffer is always filled with RAW images and then processing time is not only to move the images from the buffer to the memory but also processing it.

But in this case i will expect that if i choose 10Mpix and no filters it would have been at least a bit faster...

Maybe NX30 will beecome an option for me when the NX50 will be out but i dont expect it to totally resolve this problem.

I personally hope that this issue will be rectified by the upcoming NX500...

Re: Skateboard action with NX1100

I have both the NX1100 and NX3000.

I hadn't really looked and continuous/burst modes on the NX1100 but had been playing with these modes on the NX3000.

Unlike the NX1100 which stops further photo captures after the relevant number of images (Continuous RAW High = 3 FPS then stops, Continuous RAW Low = 8 FPS then stops, Burst = upto 30fps then stops), the NX3000 completes the relevant number of quick initial captures (5Frames RAW then about 1 per 1.5 seconds indefinitely until shutter released, 5FPS for about 2.5 seconds then 1fps indefinitely until shutter released or Burst = up to 30FPS then stops)

So I reckon the NX3000 is perhaps behaving more as you expect. I wonder if the limitation is a CPU one and this was increased to be more flexible with the NX3000.

Unless you would really miss a cable (USB) remote control or Sensor cleaning I would recommend the NX3000 as an interim step until you can afford a NX30/50 etc. With many people buying them up for the 16-50PZ and then selling the bodies you can get one really cheap (around £100 - £125 in the UK for Body with LR5 and Flash)
