But kit lenses usually aren't Nothing much to say decent image quality all around. Thing that annoyes me is the lock system which needs to be opened every time you open up the lens. Not in very active use this one, used in some rare occasions to play with different lense than the usual ones I use.

Maybe I should sell this one for couple of bucks...

This lens is actually pretty sharp, particularly wide open at 14mm, but I do tend to agree on one thing, it's one of my least uses lenses. The Micro Four Thirds kit lenses from Olympus are cheap, but then they tend to produce better images than the kit lenses from Canon or Nikon.

Re: Not very spetacular

It's not trash nor it's blurry. But in my use it has to compete with m.zuiko 45mm F1.8 so no fonder it comes out as unspetacular. Also the ligth gathering power (F3.5-5.6) on short and longend isn't much help neither when used indoors.

Re: Not very spetacular

I'm in the same boat, my 14-42 has to compete with my 12mm F/2 and my 20mm F/1.7, no guessing as to what normally wins out.

The 14-42 is not trash nor is it treasure, unfortunately it's not like Fuji where we have a wealth of excellent kit lenses. I'd sell it, but at the price you can sell one for they go for as little as beer money. I once had two copies of this lens, I sold one with my old E-PL5. I guess it's good in that sense that if I ever sell my OM-D body I'll have a lens to go with it.

You just twist the lens, no need to open the lock.

That's right.  The lock is only there to stop you accidentally collapsing it, yet some people assume they have to operate the switch to extend it too, which is not the intention of the designers - this lockless extension makes it much more convenient to use, IMHO.

Just because you can buy an L glass lens in a kit does not make it a kit lens, wtf are you smoking? You don't get the 12-40 by default even with the EM1 same deal with the 12-35 from Panasonic. OK maybe you do with the GH4 but you also pay $2500 which comes back to my point just because I can buy an L glass lens with a 5D MKIII it does not make it a kit lens!

By comparison the Fuji XE-1 comes with the Fuji 18-55 F/2.8-F/4 which is as sharp and faster for the majority of its zoom range as the Olympus 12-40 for half the price with a body. Olympus and Panasonic have nothing to compare with this.

I Prefer The Panasonic 14-42 II

I love this Panasonic newer "kit lens" and use it for about 80% of my shots - no unlocking required!  Great performance for the price and light weight.

Fuji's 18-55 is good...

But its not better than the Oly 12-40mm in performance. Also, if you don't buy an XT-1 kit or XE-2 kit, you aren't getting this lens and you'll have to shell out $600 for it at retail.

You're missing the point, it doesn't have to be better than the 12-40 its a kit lens... it just has to be better than all of the 12-xx and 14-xx kit lenses, and it is by a LONG margin being sharper than all of them at faster apertures.

You can get the 18-55 with the XE-1 for $700 I don't know what your talking about.

The XE-1 is discontinued.

Its a great deal right now because you get that lens, which I'm sure Fuji is banking on to get rid of those bodies. The body isn't horrible, though its slow and doesn't do the Fuji system much justice compared to what else they offer.

Regardless... I agree that it is a better lens than really any standard $100-200 kit zoom packaged with most cameras. It would be nice if Oly or Panny made an alternative normal zoom lens that was either 2.8-4 or even f4 (but sharp) at around $500 or less.
