help!, can not turn off my EX2F

I usually download pictures by connecting the camera via usb port into my linux PC.  I power on after connection and while trying to download pictures into my PC the camera locked up.  The power light (ring) is blue - default while connected to PC and I can not turn the camera off.

I tried to remove the battery but after removing the SD card, pushing in the lever does not pop-out the battery, so it is stuck at on position.

Since it is stuck in "downloading" mode, I can not enter menu etc.

Is there a way to fix my favorite camera?

thanks,

I can't imagine why the battery would be stuck unless it is leaking or swollen.  I would try firmly sticking a piece of duct tape or some kind of very adhesive tape to the battery and pulling it out that way.  If it is really stuck I would drill a hole in the battery, insert a screw, and yank it out.

Removing the SD card doesn't help because of the thin sheet of metal separating the card from the battery.

Mine pops right out.

Use a card reader.

I do not recommend this.  Even if the risk isn't large, there is a chance that drilling could cause the battery to explode.  If he can't find anything holding it in, then maybe holding the tab aside and giving it a good shake upside down might get it out, maybe the spring failed?  If there is one that is, I'm not familiar with this particular camera.

Hi. I use 3rd party batteries with my old EX1 and they often swell after a year or so. This leads to them getting stuck in the camera, and I have to get physical with the whole unit.

While holding open the battery locking tab, gently tap the camera on the heel of your hand to try to get the battery to move a mm or so, at which point tweezers or long nails should be able to pull it out. Obviously - any kind of impact is not advised, but I find that you only need a gentle bump or two to get a battery shifted.

Tweezers might work on their own of course.

+1

I managed to pierce a Lithium battery with a screw driver whilst changing it in a sat nav device. It was glued in and you were obviously supposed to buy a new sat nav. The chemical that came out quickly burnt a little hole in the skin of my thumb with a strange mixture of electrical and chemical hissing. Nasty stuff inside these batteries.

Re: help!, can not turn off my EX2F

please dont try drilling into a lithium ion battery, even if the battery is 'discharged' (and they never really are cos the micro circuit inside keeps the chemistry happy so as to never discharge to 0 volts), you may end up mixing chemicals that usually get on like a house on fire.

as the previous poster mentioned 3rd party after market batteries usually swell after a year or so, both of mine did, yet my original Samsung batteries are still fine. During the time they were swollen, they would get stuck as well and I would have to :

a) bang the camera moderately to jolt it out, not good

b) use a small screwdriver to jimmy it out, but damages surrounding plastic

c) use one of them wooden manicure sticks used for the findernails

http://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/selling-orange-wood-manicure-sticks-for-nail-beauty-and-personal-care/401099_290802333.html

for $118 you get a thousand of them (!)

unfortunately, this appears to be a common thing in the long term with numerous 3rd party Li-ion.

that is if this is the reason for your experienced problem, good luck.

Re: help!, can not turn off my EX2F

I am glad you got it out.

I understand concerns about drilling a hole in a battery but if I had a choice of losing a $400 camera to a stuck battery and drilling a hole in the battery I would certainly give it a try.  The OEM battery in my camera appears to a piece of black tape covering a small hole on the back end anyway.

What was wrong with the stuck battery?

no obvious leak, put another battery in and works like new.

Re: help!, can not turn off my EX2F

good that you got it out without further difficulty. guess you wont be popping that one back in.

of the two aftermarket BP1030 batteries that swelled on me, I pried one open with a stanley knife.

Posted these just for interest's sake.

(subsequently, I used the empty shell and cct board for its contacts to make a diy dummy battery with a power lead that can be connected to an external Li-ion power source I rigged up, every minus has a plus!)

swelling cant really be seen even when looking on side profile, but was enough to push outer case beyond tolerance and get stuck in camera.

that all important outer case and cct board contacts.

thanks, on the bottom near the contact looked fine without obvious buildup, likely swelling of the body, threw it away, now I am a happy camper.
