Has Canon squished Olympus?
2

2.5 years ago the famous prediction was that Olympus would be squished by the summer of 2014:

http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/42118702

Olympus, Panasonic, and m4/3 have had lots and lots of activity with new bodies, lenses, 3rd parties coming out with tons of lenses and other gear too. I guess not squished yet.

You are right! Even more m4/3 stuff. There is just so much that I can't keep track of it all. My initial list, we can see, was far from complete.

It may still happen, but so far things for us customers are looking pretty good. Here is a list of m4/3 bodies that have come out since I bought my E-M5:

Wow. the Veydra primes are sexy. I'm so glad I'm not a cinematographer right now.

m4/3: amazing vitality

Your facts are totally right but I am not sure about the point you are trying to make.

The point is that in the last 3 years the m4/3 mount has shown tremendous vitality. Not moribund at all. I wonder, is there any other mount in the last 3 years that has shown as much?

2 new Panasonic lenses

On top of all the new stuff in the last 3 years Panasonic a few days ago announced two more lenses that weren't expected:

30mm f2.8 macro

42.5mm f1.7

i do not think so

m43 is a very lively format.

Those who wanted bigger sensor and better DOF control can not buy into this system. You may be right for people who have bought into this system but there is huge majority that did not buy this format because it did not provide what they wanted ie could not chose it.

So go buy something else.

If panny and oly continue to use the same sensor for 4-5 years, new customers (those not invested in m43) WILL buy something else assuming the competition hasn't stopped and have come out with newer advanced sensors. It's only logical.

It's pretty easy to understand.

If Sony's new A8000 (2 years from now) has a brand new 50mp sensor with much better DR that competes with today's FF and clean noise free ISO of 124000 while the new EM1 MK III has the same 16mp of now (now being 2016) 5 years ago...which do you think a new customer would get? What is the likelihood of them buying the Oly?

There is no choice. Panny and Oly MUST come out with a new sensor to compete.

The 30mm was either rumored to come out or Panny has mentioned they will come out (sorry, can't remember). Either way, it was rather expected. The 42.5 was a total surprise though.

It is. Although it seems that sensors are not the biggest problems of camera manufacturers. Current cameras offer far superior sensors to smartphones, yet that is not enough to entice many new buyers.

We all know this is not going to happen. That's just a hypothetical. The thing is, sensor upgrade cycle is 3 to 4 years. That is true for both mirrorless and DSLRs of today and yesterday. Which means that E-M1 successor next year will have a new sensor (unless Olympus rushes it to the market, witch I hope will not happen). We'll probably see new sensor from Panasonic next year as well.

But some people got into their heads that new sensors should come out every year, preaching that 3 year old sensor tech is garbage and proclaiming death of MFT on this basis. Only they failed to notice that by that measure, most of the ILC cameras on the market are in this garbage category, as are all the professional DSLRs, which are even more garbage, since their sensors are even older.

So lets not give in to this obsession.

There is no choice. Panny and Oly MUST come out with a new sensor to compete.

Yes, and that is exactly what will happen, as it happened in the past.

Shows that rumour websites are just instruments of manufacturers. When something appears there it's at a manufacturer's instigation, when something truly comes out of the blue the manufacturer has just forgotten about rumouring about it, or decided not to for some rational consideration.

Finally some common sense on this issue. Manufacturers after all have to recoup their outlay and developing new image sensors cannot be cheap! We know for a fact that Panasonic and Fuji are researching at least two new sensor designs, as they have announced these initiatives. The current 16mp sensor is less than two years old (Panasonic GX7 was announced in August 2013). It supports high frame rates, electronic shutter and even 4K video and is still competitive. Do we expect every camera released to use a new sensor?

There will be a new MFT sensor at some point - if the rumours are correct it will be May this year.

Another one for the original list: Lumix G Vario 35-100mm f4-5.6

A high quality, very light and small zoom lens.

No question that m4/3's is thriving.

Ditto

+ DXO Optics Pro. Prime noise tech is a 2/3rds stop improvement for noise or JPEG/Lightroom RAWI. The dynamic range is still a half stop behind latest sensor, but I'm pretty pleased with the G6.

Yes, you are right!  I forgot that one.  I have handled one several times at stores in Japan.  Surprisingly small!  Good match for the tiny 12-32mm pancake.

m4/3 not dead yet
2

Back in April 2012 I first got involved with m4/3 with the Panasonic G3 + 14-42mm f3.5-5.6 + 45-200mm f4-5.6. Still have it, but mostly my wife uses it. Then in May 2012 I bought the following:

Olympus E-M5
Panasonic 14mm f2.5
Panasonic 20mm f1.7
Olympus 9-18mm f4-5.6
Olympus 14-150mm f4-5.6
Olympus FL-300R flash

I carefully considered the way I was going to mostly use the camera (travel) and based on my extensive experience doing that for many years I selected the gear I wanted. Worked out pretty well and figured as far as lenses were concerned I was pretty much done. Well, in the past 11 months I have also bought the following:

Olympus E-M10 + ECG-1 grip
Olympus 9mm f8 fisheye bodycap
Olympus 25mm f1.8
Olympus 45mm f1.8

The E-M10 was inexpensive (US$480) and it fixed or improved several aspects of the E-M5 that I didn't like. See my earlier post for more info about that:

http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/55214783

The fisheye was because it was inexpensive, very small, very light, and could be used on rare occasions when I wanted that strange distortion and very wide view.

The 25mm f1.8 was just because after 3 years Olympus and Panasonic have still done nothing about the banding problem of the 20mm f1.7. With the good exchange rate these days the 25mm was a lot less than in the U.S. so I got it.

The 45mm f1.8 was a lens that I didn't really think I would have much use for, but here in Japan it was just too inexpensive to pass up. And it is quite small and light so I said to myself, "What the hell?"

Of course, if m4/3 had died or was almost dead then I wouldn't have spent anymore money on it.

In July 2012 it was predicted that by July 2014 Canon would have squished Olympus:

http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/42118702

Well, July 2014 came and went. Maybe it will be July 2015?

Olympus 7-14mm f2.8 and 8mm f1.8 fisheye

Since I last posted here Olympus has added the new 7-14mm f2.8 and 8mm f1.8 fisheye.  Now it has been 36 months since I bought my E-M5 in May 2012.

By the way, here is a list of all the m4/3 lenses:

Red & yellow in-camera setting on G6 ?

Hi Geoff,

I also have a G6 like you, and was interested when you spoke about tweaking it with more red and yellow, as I've been noticing that my pics are often quite blue : is it possible to preset the colour balance in the camera, rather than in post-processing (each photo ...) ?

Thanks,

Pete
