Viewer for Stereo Realist slides?

My late husband took a lot of Stereo Realist photos in the early 1960s and probably before. I've started scanning the slides (scan both, then choose the better one), but it would be nice to view some of them in 3D. I'm sure my grandchildren would enjoy that too.

Can someone please recommend an inexpensive viewer? I see quite a few styles of viewers on Amazon, but am unsure which one will accommodate my slides, which measure 4" x 1-5/8" (10x4 cm).

Thanks!

Hi, Susan

Try these web sites for 3D viewers
http://www.3dstereo.com
http://www.3dstereo.com/viewmaster/3dl.html

Or if you have a flatbed scanner, you could scan your
favorite photos then email them or view on your computer.
A 3D monitor or 3DTV helps but is not necessary if you use
anaglyph (red/green glasses) or side-by-side viewers. Or
experiment with "cross-eyed" viewing off your monitor.

My HP G4050 scanner will scan up to 6 snapshots at once. After
scanning, the photos can be processed with Stereo Photo Maker
(free from http://stereo.jpn.org/eng/stphmkr/) - Windows only.
Perhaps you would like to use a photo editor to touch-up the older
photos. (contrast, color correction, scratches, etc.)

Thank you, Cullings. Yes, I've been editing with PSE. Here's one of my favorites so far--but it's not in 3D, of course.

There are some viewers that accept those old Kodak slides. There are dozens of these on eBay [hiss]:

Google Vintage Kodak Kodaslide Viewer. They go from $25 to "way too much". I have one of these and it is a good way to view them.

If you are scanning the slides anyway, why not print them out and use a "stereoopticon"; that was the way people viewed them a century ago and is still a good way.

Here is one I made. It's a simple thing to make or you can buy a commercial version:

Here are a couple of antiques:

It's easy to print out cards of your favorite stereo scenes, especially since you have 3 computers!

Re: Viewer for Stereo Realist slides?

Boy, you guys know your stuff! I didn't realize these were Kodak slides, but sure enough, they Kodak right on them. There was a time when Kodak was king--sort of. I don't think my dad ever had a Kodak camera, but I remember seeing the name on his darkroom supplies.

Are you hissing at eBay?   I've been known to buy (and sell) things on eBay; in fact, I have an enlarger lens listed right now. I suspect it's not going to attract a buyer though. I'll check eBay out for viewers. Good idea.

I didn't need another project. For several years I've been working on digitizing my father's many photographs, and I'm still at it. But I didn't want to neglect my husband's slides.

Thanks for your help!

What do you mean, "sort--of"? Kodak invented photography as practiced in the last half of the 20th century. My dad had several Kodak cameras, like this one:

Over the years, I have had a series of horrible experiences w/ eBay. I have banned them. I think my "problem" was low IQ; I simply didn't/don't understand the rules. Every time I sorta caught up, they changed or added to the @#$% rules. It was more of a "game" than I wanted. I know many people who love to play that game and they find it fun; but I'm not wired that way.

Re: Viewer for Stereo Realist slides?

A Realist "RED BUTTON" viewer is perhaps the best way to experience your old stereo slides. There's always a bunch on eBay. They have achromat lens to keep the view superior to most other viewers.

CAUTIONS:

The Realist Red Button viewer is bakelite and cracks easily. Get one with no cracks.

The Realist red Button viewer coud have been strored away with 2 "D" cell batteries installed. Internal corrosion from leaky batteries is common (but repairable).

This seller has the best selection at any one time, really knows his stuff, and decribes the items fairly and honestly.

I don'r know If he has any red buttons for sale currently, but you always ask..

Re: Viewer for Stereo Realist slides?

I agree with above. Order a black plastic Stereo Realist red button viewer with adjustable spacing lenses from Dr. T. (his nickname well known).  He is stereo expert George Themelis from Clevelan OH area.... All his products have been carefully cleaned, spruced up and have the best halogen bulbs. Kodak viewers are not bad, true, but Realist model is the one to get for your viewing. You are better off getting one from his web site or his eBay pages in my view. I am sure you will be pleased. These viewers appear all the time....many were made and still work well. Gerry

Re: Viewer for Stereo Realist slides?

Hi. I have several thousand Stereo Realist "3D" slides that my father took between 1948-1960, and I want to digitize them. I see that you already did digitize slides, and I'm wondering what scanner you used. I'm considering the Epson V600 which should be sufficient, but, before I buy it, I'm trying to learn what others are doing. ALSO, did you have a holder for the 3D slides? I assume I'm scan both images on a slide, but only save one of them. So, also, what holder did you use?

I hope to hear from you.

Thanks,

Bill Mathis

Do you want to make stereo pairs (scan both images), or just scan one side for 2D??

Re: Viewer for Stereo Realist slides?

I used the Epson 4490, which you can get on ebay for cheap. It was ok, not super great, but worked at the time over 10 years ago. I now have the V700, which is much better. I had to make a mask out of cardboard that lifted the slide with two images up off the glass slightly. If you notice the slide masks used for scanners lift the images off the glass and the focus is fixed on that. Also the slide scanner module also seems to have a sweet spot for where the slides have to be placed for a good image. Note the placement of the 2D slides into the masks provided and where they end up on the scanner glass, and make your mask so it's in that area as well. So you have to experiment a little. If you want to create a 3D image from the two slides, you can do that with www.stereomaker.net software. It's slow work, and it took me several months of day to day scanning and fixing the slides--well over a 1000 slides. But now they are very precious to me, digitized.

Here are two examples from 1972.  I improved the sharpness and color in post processing. Note the first one is the actual Realist format. The second, I cropped to 16:9 HD. These were taken with a Realist 3.5 using Kodacrome. I did this to show the slides using my projector. I found that most slides could be cropped top and bottom without losing the interest of the scene. That is another advantage of copying the slides. I have slides from 1964 to 1995 when I stopped using the Realist--a 3.5 and a 2.8 with German lens--and switched to 2D slide film. I now use a Panasonic 3D1 and Fuji W3.

Re: Viewer for Stereo Realist slides?

I have a viewer like this one. I make with "stereophpotomaker" the slides one next to other (L-R) and copy them on the phone. for viewing i mount the viewer and look.

I have one in the pocket with the phone and use it when I find a victim to view my 3d pictures.
