How many still use G12

I wonder about the popularity of the G12 since so much is said about G15-G16, et al  I have one, just got it the other day, and have it for sale now due to my illness and vision problems. It is not showing signs of selling and I wondered if it were obsolete or if other newer models had taken over. An comments welcome.

Still using G10.  Takes good pictures in daylight up to ISO 400.

I can't even give it away, so might as well keep it.

Regards, and I hope you have a speedy recovery.

Thank you so much. I probably will keep the G12, it is not selling. I appreciate your kind words.

I need a trip to your island to get some sunshine and warmth:-))

Still periodically using the G12

It's a wonderful camera and I didn't feel the need to update to any future G releases. I've had all the Canon G series since the G1, but the G12 is the first G series camera that I've used where I didn't feel the need to upgrade to the next newest model.

It has a unique, absolutely wonderful way of rendering colors - but alas, like any of the tiny sensor that is used for P&S cameras back "when," it suffers from a limitation when it comes to dynamic range scenarios. One of my most favorite photos was taken with it and the 320 flash in bounce mode of my niece holding one of our cats, Sheba (see below). The clarity of this image, along with the dynamic way of rendering colors, makes this camera one of my favorites.

That's funny because the G12 has sort of taken on a cult following. They sell for over $200 on eBay in good condition. More if excellent with the box. They sell like hotcakes on Craigslist, here in Michigan.

Is your price too high perhaps? A nice clean used one should have no problem fetching $150. For that money, it's a bargain.

The G12 was the last of the G series with a swivel screen. That should be a selling point. It has a CCD sensor which is not as response in low light and shows a bit more noise at even ISO 100 (just like the XZ-1 and LX5) but, CCD sensors have wider tonality range and vibrant colors. If used correctly, the G12 files are quite detailed and colorful. I think I could get very, very close to G15 level image quality with a G12 under most conditions and when shot in RAW and processed in Lighroom or similar software. Of course, it's the slower lens that betrays the full potential of that marvelous camera. You can get an S110 for about the same price and it's smaller with almost the same lens.

I have a g12 and just received a g16 from amazon.  interestingly enough..the g12 is going for 599.00 on amazon and I bought the g16 for 449.  I will miss the rotating screen but  am looking forward to trying the g16.  Amazon is good, because I can return it if I don't like it.  The g series also has a 3rd party vendor that sells a vintage type leather case.

My photography is taking me to the street.  Love the people!

Still using mine, bought four years ago. The best of the Canon G series in my opinion - has all the features, combined with real build quality not evident on subsequent models.

G11

I had happily used an A610 for many years until it developed a sticking shutter beyond economic repair. After some agonizing I bought a slightly used second hand G11 as opposed to a new G12 which was available by then.

I am still happy with it and I suppose I would be happy with a G12 too.

Best wishes,

Yes, still using it but not exploited all feature. I use it as a P&S and get good results.

The reason for the price increase on the G12 is simply because its out of production and those are prices for brand new G12's. All cameras that go out of production end up increasing in price when they are brand new and unopened- its a collector price really. Silly to me, but that's the way of it.

The ol' law of supply and demand in full effect.

Thanks for the reply. Good pics, too. I will just keep my G12 and be happy.

Wonderful images!

I had a G12 and now a G16. Love both cameras dearly. Very capable in the right hands.

Re: How many still use G12

Hi Russell

Hope you are on the mend.

I have a slew of cameras from Leicas to Linhofs, but still love my G12.

Main points are...

  • very reliable and holds a charge well; always ready to go
  • swivelling screen
  • pocketable
  • small but useable optical finder
  • good image quality
  • excellent for close up, even in the most contorted positions.

Better come down to Australia and get some warmth.

All the best  Dave S

A few years on. It is mid-2018, and the G12 that was my pocket and travel camera from late 2010 to late 2013 has long been superseded by cameras with bigger sensors and/or more pixels.

It is hardly worth selling at the price I could realistically ask, especially as one of the strap lugs has broken because of the cheesy metal it was made from (not that it makes any difference to me as I always use it with a wrist strap attached to the tripod socket).

By the time postage is paid and eBay and PayPal have taken their cut I might as well give it away. So instead I am keeping it to use in places and conditions that I don't want to risk a more valuable camera.

I am still astonished at the quality of image that the G12 gets from its tiny sensor and tiny pixels when the focus and exposure are spot on, and there is no camera shake, even when shooting JPEGs rather than RAW, as you can see below. Shame about the two dead pixels

Re: How many still use G12

The G12 is a great little camera - I have used it often when I didn't want to haul my 70D & gear around. But just this week I supplanted the G12 with a G7X Mk II.  It is a very good upgrade and takes great shots (I shoot RAW).  The only thing to get used to is the touch screen and avoiding inadvertent setting changes. I've considered locking the screen and just using the menu but it is really convenient. I don't miss the viewfinder but I do miss the hot shoe - I have the 270EX II Speedlite for the G12.

Thanks to this thread being somehow rediscovered...

...I am going to remember to use my G12 more often.  We often forget cameras in the past because we tend to be so preoccupied with the "latest and greatest."  So I'm going to take the G12 with me on an upcoming trip (along with some of the latest and greatest of course...   ).  And I'll bet the G12 images will be quite competitive with the exception of some DR and higher (clean) ISO scenarios.  But that would be expected given the age of the camera.
