Correction, Skippy,

Actually the S110 lens is not faster. It ranges from f2.0 at 24mm to f5.9 at 120mm. While the G15 ranges from f1.8 at 28mm to f2.8 at 140mm and is better corrected in addition. The lens on the G15 is quite wonderful.

I'm in agreement with you. I just bought another G15 from the Canon refurb site. I never did give the G15 I had a good chance. I sold it soon after I got it because I happened upon a deal on a G1-X and felt the G15 was redundant, if not inferior. I only managed about 200 shots with the G15 and although they looked promising, that wasn't enough time to really get to know that camera. So I'm no expert there but, I have owned a G9, G12, G1-X, S100 and S110 so I kinda know my Powershots a little.

I have an Olympus XZ-2 which I don't like that much, not sure why. I'm going to match up the G15 to the XZ-2 and do a little shoot out, if you will. Should be interesting because on paper, the XZ-2 is better. My previous results differed from the "paper", so we'll see. I'll try to be scientific about it, as best I can.

Good for you! I'll be anxious to read your comments about it.

I find that in good light, it is hard to tell the difference between the G1X and the G15. But as the light dims into evening, there is more and more difference in the G1X-II favor. The G1X (both 1 and II) make higher IQ images due to their larger sensors. But the G15 is both smaller and has a longer zoom range -- so it has its place in the scheme of things also. I use both cameras.

I'm sure the G15 will work out fine for me. I know it's limitations and I plan to use it in good light most of the time anyway. It's a nice walk around camera with good reach although it tends to get soft on the long side. I have other cameras that I can turn to for low light work or where I need excellent image quality.

The G1-X I liked at lot. Wouldn't hesitate to get another clean one. The G1-X II on the other hand, I have mixed feelings about. I doubt I would spring for another one. I was happy to sell the one I had.

What didn't you like about the G1-X II?

Andy

Well since you asked.

I would like to preface by saying that the camera has merits and I can understand why someone would like it however, there were sticking points for me that I just couldn't get past.

1. More noise at lower ISO's than a camera in this price range should exhibit.

2. Soft images at the longer focal lengths.

3. Hated the dual ring setup. The front ring was all but useless and I was always changing settings accidentally due to the fact that there is no tactile differentiation between the rings.

4. Relatively slow AF still not on par with even an RX100.

5. Over aggressive noise reduction in-camera JPEG.

6. Heavy handed in-camera lens correction resulting in soft corners and lower image quality especially in the corners and edges at certain focal lengths.

7. Dismal dynamic range at base ISO.

I did like the build quality and the excellent EVF.

To demonstrate the poor image quality, I'll offer two shots of the same building, albeit from two directions but taken at the same time, from the same distance in the same light. The settings are a bit different but, the G1X-II settings are in the range of where it should have no difficulty resolving details yet, viewed at 100%, the image looks like mush when compared to the Coolpix A. I also did comps with the G1-X Mark I) and the G1-X spanked the G1-X II pretty badly. The fact is the G1-X lens is so much sharper than the G1-X II lens. Now I'm not saying I didn't get some great results from the Mark II when conditions were ideal and I shot in RAW but, I just didn't get enough keepers to warrant the cost of the camera.

I don't want to knock the Mark II, I know many people like it but, it was #2 worst camera of 2014 by The Camera Store TV on Youtube (I know them guys are not favored around these parts).

Canon G1-X II JPEG SOOC no processing

Nikon Coolpix A JPEG SOOC no processing

To be fair, I did get some pretty good shots out of it but, it never really blew me away like some of the other cameras I had.

Canon G1-X II (Subject is E-P5)

There is more noise in the G1X II shot at ISO 400 than I would have expected, and the sharpness is less than what I would've hoped for. Thanks for the info and for providing the pics to compare.

Andy

Notice also the severe perspective distortion. The vertical lines in the G1X-II shot are not nearly parallel and convergent with some odd misalignment. The round planter in the bottom left corner looks oval and oblong. The vertical lines in the Coolpix A shot are nearly parallel which is indicative of the very low distortion and subsequent lack of correction by the camera, resulting in a sharper image (among other reasons). This is where the G1-X II really disappointed me.

Re: Almost anything new.

The Coolpix looks noticeably sharper and with less distortion, as you pointed out. It was less noisy, although it was shot at a lower ISO, I believe. Even so, I'm surprised that the G1-X II had that much shadow noise at ISO 400.

Russell,

God speed on your complete cancer recovery.

Just a curiosity here; were you in attendance at the June 2009 International Ragtime Festival, in Sedalia, Mo?  For some photography reason in that distant past, I felt I might have met you there.

I have the G2 X, since a couple of months after its original release.  It's a little clunky, like some say.  But a fine camera for some peoples objectives.

Another kindred photography spirit.

My typing is not so good early in the morning.  Of course I meant G1 X.

No, nearest I came to Missouri was when I was driving over I-70 to Colorado to see our son.

I will check the G2X out, am not familiar with it.

Challenges might improve my photography, but they certainly do improve my file search.
