G15 is definitely better but probably impossible to find new. Don¨t know about G16.

I recently bought a Canon refurbished G15 to replace my G9. I really like it, although I still like my G9 too. My wife "inherited" the G9, moving her up from my old A620. So, I still have access to the G9, but am using the G15 much more. I paid $220 shipped for my G15 from Canon, however it is now up to $250. All Canon refurbished products come with a one year warranty.

This picture was taken with my old Canon G7 maybe it would be a good choice if one can still be found.

Happy to learn that you are active still and looking for a better camera. I can recommend the G15 which is very compact and very fast. The G16 is almost the same camera with WI-Fi and some bells and whistles.

Challenges might improve my photography, but they certainly do improve my file search.

I can second those who have mentioned the G15.  I have both the G15 and the G9.  The G15 is a bit smaller than the G9 and has a fixed screen.  It is much faster and the pictures are cleaner... less noise and less CA but nice and sharp.  It is a very nice camera.  The lens goes from 28mm to 140mm equiv.  It will focus down to very close for macro.  I think you would like it. I do.

Re: What to get that will do as well as the old G9-G10 cxameras

I've had both the G15 and G16 and agree that the G15 is superb and fast, but the G16 is noticeably faster in every way. Focus is 50% faster than the G15 (according to Canon, and it seems so in use) and Continuous AF is faster at about 5.6fps. There are a host of other minor improvements that really do make a differenc in use, but that doesn't take anything away from the fact that the G15 is excellent as well. Personally, I much prefer my G16 and find that it's the camera I pick up 95% of the time. If I were to recommend a compact camera, the G16 is the one I'd recommend in a heartbeat.

Yes, the G16 is 45% faster than the G15 and has a faster processor, but the G15 is pretty darn fast-- Much faster than the G9 and G12 for example. Both cameras have the same lens, but the G16 uses a BSI CMOS sensor, while the G15 uses a standard CMOS sensor.

Great idea, I thought. However, it didn't seem to llve up to its promise. The camera lost some resolution and comparisons in the DPR studio comparison scene shows the G15 has more fine detail and is sharper. I believe that Canon increased the NR on the G16 to get better high ISO noise characteristics. And at ISO 3200 I believe that it does -- but only marginally. At all lower ISO's the G15 looks sharper and is slightly more detailed. Look and see...

So, while I had intended to buy a g16, I decided to stand pat and keep using my G15, and instead of the G16 I bought a G1X-II -- which I am thrilled with!. But the G15 is smaller and a very fine camera. Of course the G16 is a very fine and faster camera. But when you pixel peep, the G15 has the edge... which was more important to me. Can't go wrong with either one.

These replies make it hard to make a decision. I have a LX3 and a M43 cam and lens and that may be all I need.

Dale, I will try to get out of this now and will say the choices are varied. But I have been undergoing treatments for cancer and just today ended my relationship with the center here. Now I must wait to hear from the surgeon in Atlanta. It will be around a month I think but do not yet know. In light of this, I am limited to the photography I can handle. Indoors mostly for now. Will hope I am taking pics of spring leaves and flowers outside soon. I was 89 years old on 17th. Darn, time sure flies!

Almost anything new.

The one regret I have since jumping into digital photography back in 1997 with a Sony Mavica FD-5 (hard to believe we've come so far in just 17 short years), is that I did not use the best camera I could afford at the time.

When I look back now at my earlier images, I don't care what camera I used or how much I enjoyed using it or how much of a "value" it was, all I can think is darned, I should have used a better camera. All the memories of the camera fade over time except the image quality.

Do you believe that any Canon Powershot camera can deliver the best possible image quality for the same cost as a Sony RX100 for example, or a GM1?

Just food for thought.

If you must have a Powershot, at least get the S110. It's the same sensor and processor as a G15, has a faster lens and fits into the pocket. The G series cameras make no sense anymore.
