canon 85mm f1.2 II front element issue

Hello everyone, I am really new to photography,,,have just bought myself a camera lens from second hand shop, it is a canon 85mm f1.2 II, it looks quit clean and work same as the other lens( really don't know what to check in order to make sure it works right), the only thing that I just notice is the "grove" on top of the front element has scratches, does it mean the lens has been opened by someone, or it could on there when it came out of the factory.
Should I get it returned or just don't worry about it.
Does any third party company can manufacture the element for this lens other than canon?
Thanks for all the advise.

EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM?

Not just opened, those rings have been replaced. They should be black, not bright bare metal. Looks like someone went for a "retro" look to make the front look like a 1950's era lens. The notches you have circled are normal, where a spanner wrench fits to screw them on/off.

Front of the lens should look like this (LINK)

Re: EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM?

It isn't just the front ring that is shiny metallic but the next couple of rings down holding the next couple of lens elements. These rings are matt black for a reason  to reduce internal reflections, worth testing in into the light to see how it performs. Personally I would be very cautious and would consider returning it if possible.   If it was very cheap I am sure the black parts could be sourced from canon and a competent camera technician could fit them.  Is the back of the lens the same?

good luck.

I seriously doubt that someone has changed the ring on that lens. It is probably just a slightly different shade of black that is exaggerated under certain lighting conditions.

Take a look at the B&H Photo website. It's not black either:

They're supposed to be dark grey, with a matte finish. That thing looks strange

Looks like it may have been opened at some point for cleaning. The ring itself looks right, no idea why some posters think it looks like blank metal ;).

If the lens works like you expect it to work, I would not worry much about it.

I tried to look at my lens from every angel, still looks nothing like the one posted by the OP.

Must be some very strange reflections going on then...

Just strong light, making the painted metal ring look much more grey than it actually is. I am pretty sure that the shape/design of the ring looks pretty much exactly like the one on your lens?

I guess you mean "yes, the shape/design of the ringS looks pretty much the same". Just the bright light threw you off.
