Would you like a smallish Canon PowerShot with a built in EVF?

To my knowledge the only current PowerShots with built in EVFs (electronic view finders) are the SX50 and SX60. These cameras are quite big, too big for my taste. I would love something smaller with a built in EVF, how about you?

Would you like it to have a 50x zoom range?  How about a 3" swivel- tilt LCD? These items as well as a decent EVF require a size much like the SX50hs.  My ideal would be the size of the old S2is but look at what that small size offered.  I do prefer smaller but will not give up all the above mentioned items.

I think the Powershot G1 X series would be a good candidate for an EVF.

Absolutely. Much prefer a camera with built-in EVF. That's why I got a Nikon P7800 instead of Canon G16, and Panasonic ZS50 is much like a SX710 with an EVF.

If my SX280HS had an EVF I wouldn't be replacing it with the new Panasonic ZS50 when it becomes available.

I don't require that much zoom or a tilting screen but I am pleased that the SX50 meets your requirements Don. I had an SX40 a few years ago but didn't use it much because of it's size.

I almost bought a P7800 instead of my G15. Some of the reviews I read at the time said that the P7800's EVF was't very good and that the camera was a bit slow so I opted for the G15.

The Panasonic looks interesting. I'll keep an eye out for the reviews and image samples when it is released.

I actually currently use an SX40hs as I only upgrade every 2nd or 3rd model.  My next move will be the SX60hs mostly due to the improved ergonomics and better EVF.  For an all in one travel cam these SZs can't be beat.  And certainly that long zoom and twisty LCD are very much required for quick shots on the move, especially with touring crowds.

I certainly agree smaller is better but be careful what you wish for.

Agreed...and bring back that fully tilt/swivel LCD (and lose the minimum budget tilt-only one it was downgraded to in the G1X II).

There you go, now you prefer a fully tilt/swivel LCD and yet having used those I prefer the tilt / flip version on the G1X II.

Incidentally the optional EVF on the G1x II works well and also tilts through 90 degrees.  I've ended up leaving it on permanently.

Then why not buy it.

Panasonic makes them.

Just leave your brand love and buy the camera you want.

They're not available yet...at least not here. It does look interesting though.

I thought you were referring to the Panasonic zs50 in particular, since that was the camera mentioned. They're available for pre-order on Amazon right now. Neither the S120 nor the SX280 has a viewfinder or provisions to have one mounted.

I said S120 with viewfinder since the LF-1 uses a similar sized sensor with a similar in speed Aperture. It's also roughly the same size.

So basicly it's a S120 but with a longer lens and built-in viewfinder. Considering everyone voted for a viewfinder this is just a better buy for those people

The ZS40 has a smaller sensor with a longer zoom lens. so therefore a SX280 with viewfinder.

The GM-5 is something rather strange. It's a interesting little camera with a expensive price tag.
