AWESOME!
1

Hello.

I just wanted to bump UP this lens for others thinking about longer Canon prime. I´d say GET THIS instead of 85mm f/1,8. It´s so awesome and sharp I can´t still believe it, holding this lens in my hands.

When I looked trough the images and outcome of my resolution tests, I was like "nah, it´s not the best lens I got", especially not at sweetspot aperture. Then I checked the EXIF again, and saw I took that shot wide open. Shocked! Very sharp wide open, and totally awesome at f/4. Looking at DxO it seems that it´s right. This old lens smokes and literally TROLLS all newer both DSLR and CSC lenses in this class and price range. I´m happy I bought it.

If it could have IS, it would be absolutely killer lens.

That is easy because there are no such newer lenses (not sure what CSC is).

I had this lens for a while and I had to return it for consistent backfocus. I think it is a very underrated lens, and a great value. It is a bit low contrast but there is some beauty in that, as well. Very smooth background blur.

Re: AWESOME!

CSC = Compact Cystem Camera = MILC, Mirrorless...

Mirrorless lenses are usually newer, and yet, these are not really any better in terms of image quality. Not even wide open. That was my point.

I might agree that I like to touch the image in PP for saturation with this lens a little bit more, but it really depends on situation. Sometimes it can be too much, but so can be with other lenses...

Re: AWESOME!

I have it and learned it is rather soft nearer the edges near wide open. It is very good in the center though.  And sharpness near the edges does come in to play for portraits.
