Re: Some shots with E-M1+40-150 & D810+70-200

I’ve done some experimentation along those lines… and I have discovered there are other variables that appear more important than F stop in this context. For example, Oly lens ability to get so close to the subject has a huge impact on the final image. You have less background, it’s easy to position the camera in such a way to find a smooth (and perhaps more distant) background, all of which can affect the final appearance of separation, never mind the optical formulas for DOF. During my experimentation last weekend in and around the house, I found that the ability to get the lens so close to the subject matter was far more important in achieving the desired image than F stop to DOF ratios. In fact, I cannot think of a single instance where the OPTION of getting close to the subject would be a disadvantage for this type of photography. But I can think of many disadvantages of using a lens that REQUIRES greater distance to the subject.

A little post processing and you won't be able to tell the difference with these samples posted here.

?I am not talking abou the post processing. I am talking about the material used on his pics on the wall. I noticed hte fomat ooks great, I cannot judge the pic IQ from here

Re: Some shots with E-M1+40-150 & D810+70-200

I think I answered this somewhere here but not sure where, the shots on my wall are all aluminum prints I ordered from AdoramaPix.com. The large ones are 16" x 24" and the smaller ones, 17"x11". I didn't own my E-M1 when I got most of these so they are shots with my D700 (12MP) and D800 (36MP). I want to try printing some of my E-M1 shots, which I'm sure will look great, it's just cost (about $80 each for the 16x24's) and I'm running out of space to hang more...

There are above my desk in my study.

When I want to print, I usually get a few ready then wait for Adoramapix to have a sale, then order.

Hello Kari,

Thanks for the comment. Yes, I had terrible results with tracking and, by mistake I had face recognition on too so it was even worse. The next time I made sure tracking was off and face recognition too but still had many poor shots. I had more keepers than my first attempt with my E-M1 but nowhere close to the keepers from my Nikon. I'll have to go out and try again with my 40-150 which I did not have when I made my first and second attempt.

The motocross event was also the first time for me to try the high frame rate and I encountered a big problem there too which does not happen at all in an optical viewfinder like my Nikon. When I panned and shot at a high rate, the EFV blacked out completely so I could not even follow the biker and stay on target. This doesn't happen at all with an optical viewfinder as, between each shot, you immediately see where you are and are able to follow the subject. I was standing close to the track and shooting riders zooming past me at about 20ft away and, unfortunately, my E-M1 just could not do it. So, I really like the camera but either I'm doing something wrong or it just cannot keep up with fast action like this...

Here's a crop of one of my D800 shots... It's pretty sharp.

Shot with my D800 as he rode past me at close range.

A +/- 1:1 crop of the above shot... Pretty good I think.

Another passing me at close range shot with my D800.

Again, I think pretty stunning detail.

I could not repeat anything close to it with my E-M1. This was only my second attempt our here with my E-M1 but, only my third time out here with my Nikon. I know that I turned face recognition and tracking off this time - but I don't remember if I was using continuous autofocus or not. I need to try again sometime.

I had a bothersome issue with my efv blacking out completely during a high frame rate as the biker rode past me and I was trying to shoot, to such an extent that I could not keep him accurately in the frame and ended up with many throw-aways like this... So, unfortunately, my two attempts at fast action like this with my E-M1 were disappointing whereas my Nikon was stunning. Perhaps still operator error though - I am not sure... Another example below.

E-M1, started off OK but, see next one...

Again, my efv, at 10fps, was blacking out completely and I could not follow the rider...

Any tips or advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

The OM-D pictures seem flatter and there is less noise tolerance but the actual difference is not as substantial as one would think. The OM-D does well against its full frame counterpart.

Yes, I think the E-M1 does amazingly well for a small sensor that so many full-frame only owners would make fun of. I really enjoy the camera and am eagerly awaiting the new super wide pro zoom that is supposed to be coming out this year.

I took this at the Queen concert in Dallas last year with my E-M1 and 45mm f1.8 (They allowed us to take cameras in and to shoot).

Re: Some shots with E-M1+40-150 & D810+70-200

I just discovered that by accident, I uploaded the wrong photo at number 23. It is a crop of my E-M1 photo and not a 1:2 crop of the Nikon shot. Here is what it should have been accompanied by the 1:2 crop of my E-M1 shot:

D800 crop at +/- 1:2

Below is the E-M1 1:2 crop.

E-M1 +/- 1:2 crop.

Again, at the same aperture the E-M1 has a greater dof and correspondingly not as smooth bokeh. I did no processing to these shots, i.e. no changes to contrast, vibrance, curves, sharpening etc. I shot raw, imported into LR made virtual copies of the ones to crop, cropped and exported to jpg. So, these are all how they came out of my cameras.

Thanks. I was bought out of my company by my two ex-partners since then and retired since then so, I got rid of the car, which was thankfully paid off, and bought something much more practical for my photography, a Subaru Forester. Now I can go on dirt roads without worrying about getting a flat tire as would happen in my Merc.
