NX100 replacement Screen

Hello everyone

I am what you call a super budget photographer. I recently purchased an NX100 used and am making great progress with it I think. I use manual focus lenses (FD) and really enjoy the process.

My problem is that the screen is quite scratched up from the previous owner. It makes manual focus a bit more difficult.

I looked online and found a couple places that sold replacement screens, but my concern is:

Do I need an actual replacement screen or do I need to replace the glass on top of it? Is there even a piece of glass there? I don't want to buy a screen and take it apart and realize that there is a piece of glass that's scratched. To be honest I'm nervous to even take it apart since if I break it it'll be a while before the wife allows me to get a replacement.

Thanks for your attention

Dave

I can relate to the budget photographer description as I'm currently making do with an NX10.

Construction of the NX100 and NX10 is similar apart from different body shapes.  I think they use identical AMOLED screens but there might be some minor difference.  The service manual for the NX10 includes an exploded view and parts list that confirms there is a glass or plastic cover on top of the screen.  They refer to it as "WINDOW-LCD" and it is available as spare part no. AD64-02655A.  The screen itself is described as "OLED AM", available as part no. AD07-00117A.

The NX10 service manual also has pictorial disassembly instructions but they would not be relevant to the NX100 because of the very different screw locations.  I don't know whether anyone has managed to find a service manual for the NX100.

Personally, I wouldn't be game to take the camera apart unless it was already broken.  However someone posted here a few days ago a description of how they removed the screen cover from an NX1000 or NX1100.  If I can find that post, I will reply again with a link to it.

Re: NX100 replacement Screen

You may want to ask Usee how he went about removing the top layer of the LCD on his camera to replace it with a matte one:

(first reply)

If the top layer is plastic, my guess is that you'd heat it up along the edges gently and pry it off gradually.  But he'd probably be the person to ask.

Re: NX100 replacement Screen

Thanks for your time!

I have a little experience with electronics, and work with some real techs, so I could maybe get some help from them.

I thought that was the case, and I suppose I need to decide whether or not I should go ahead with replacing it. It would be great if I could, but if I bricked it I would be devastated haha.

I will definitely message him. There probably isn't too much difference in the build of the models. Thanks.

The post that OrdinarilyInordinate linked to was the one I referred to but couldn't find.  After another look at my NX10 and the service manual, I am sure the protective glass/plastic is on the outside of the camera's back panel whereas the amoled screen is inside.  Therefore there is no need to undo any screws.

The protector seems to be self-adhesive around the edges, so if you can lift one corner slightly, perhaps with an old-style razor blade, it may peel off.   As Usee has actually done it, his advice will be invaluable.  Good luck.

That is already a pretty good description:

NX1000 with a anti-reflective protection glass

View: original size

The screen itself is a pure plastic cover without adhesive.

It is taped with a both sided adhesive tape to the rear of the camera.

I had the luck whilst lifting the plastic screen on one edge with a knife (you need a sturdy and thin piece of metal to lift a corner), the tape nearly remained on its place, thus, I could use it to fix the new cover glass.

-

The problem is, that this solution wasn't cheap because of the anti-reflective protection glass, which I bought from Edmund Optics.

I used a glass cutter and a sharp edge on a table (and something that prevents the remaining glass from braking), to break the glass (out of a bigger glass) to the needed size.

-

If you are no perfectionist in regard of optics and anti-reflective coatings, you could either consider a better anti-reflective coated plastic cover, or a anti reflective glass, from every device you know of and go to a window manufacturer, or a picture frame service, to cut the glass, or plastic to the needed size.

-

If you are a careful person, you get the best anti-reflective result, if you just remove the old cover and don't replace it...

...however, you increase the risk of damage of the LCD dramatically...

...whereas I wouldn't overstate this.

Re: NX100 replacement Screen

Interesting procedure. I assume it is the same roughly for the NX100. Samsung confirmed to me that there is indeed a piece of plastic over the amoled.

Here's a thought...could I put one of those non adhesive self sticking covers from ebay on the actual amoled?

The thing is, that the plastic cover has a certain distance to the actual amoled,

thus it is pretty good protecting against impact.

You can put everything on the actual amoled, but you won't like it, if it reflects too much...

Re: NX100 replacement Screen

I was looking at a boxwave non reflective cover - at this point anything is better than my current situation where the plastic is so scuffed I can barely use it for manual focus (which is all I use.)
