Oly 75 1.8 at the theatre (warning: 29 images)

We bought tickets for our daughter to see the Disney Live three classic fairytales show in Melbourne. Their FAQ had this good news:

Can we bring our cameras and video cameras?
Video and still cameras (without a flash) are permitted, provided they are non-professional (no tripods or cameras and/or video recorders with retractable lenses), and the photos and footage is intended for personal use only

So no professional cameras then, luckily I only have an E-M1 I decided to take along the 75mm 1.8 as it's the longest lens I currently own and guessed lighting would be variable. Our seats were a way back so I could nearly fit the entire stage into the viewfinder.

Turned off the AF assist lamp, disabled auto EVF switching so only the EVF was on, and disabled the AF confirmation beep, stealthy as possible so as not to disturb anyone. Tried manual first with auto ISO but the lighting was too variable to keep up, changed over to aperture priority and kept it wide open. Pressed the info button until the live histogram was displayed so I could avoid blowing any highlights, and rode the exposure compensation.

Quite happy with the results, though they are only good for web. Only a few were out of focus, a few with too badly blown highlights. In all shot about 380 odd frames with a few movies, and at the end of the day the battery indicator was still showing 3 bars (would be nice to see a percentage though). Ended up with just over a hundred shots that I liked.

Post processing is a bit slow at the moment as I've only had the camera a month. Currently using Olympus Viewer 3 for RAW processing of WB and exposure. For these shots I adjusted exposure down for any small blown highlights, bumped up shadows a bit if needed, then expored to TIF. Opened next in AfterShot Pro 2, sharpened, straightened if required, and cropped. Athentech Perfectly Clear was also applied if it helped the shot, it's just a tick box in ASP.

Thanks for looking! Sorry if the number of photos is bad protocol

You did well - nice to see a more enlightened attitude to recording cinema.  But with some users not knowing how to turn off their flash units and other distracting functions I cannot blame them.

Theatre shots do take a bit of working out but they are straight forward enough with a bit of intelligent effort.  The stage lighting helps - a nice bright consistently lit stage is great.

I have not had the opportunity to try out my 75/1.8 for stage yet as I have previously used Canon EF gear.  But hope to make sea-change in time. The 75/1.8 is really still a bit "far away" but once you get to 100mm+ it all starts to happen.

Turning the AF assist lamp is a good tip. Useful also in street photography and for wild life.
Can I guess your Settings, you are in Aperture Priority, Stopped wide open @1.8, ISO Auto?
Correct me if I am wrong.
Did you touch your Exposure Compensation?
Nice photos by the way.
this is a place where you can take advantage of the reach of the 75mm 1.8.

"recording cinema" should be "theatre/circus" - some sort of freudian slip.

Of course "you did" but it needs to be emphasised that the focus assist light should be always off when at a live perfomance lest you get ejected as this would be probably even more distracting (to performers at least) than flash units firing.  In fact I set my focus assist light (with all sounds) off by rote on all my cameras as one of a group twee "helping" devices that does more to advertise that you are taking photographs than they supply in practical help.  I tend to take my chances in getting AF without it even if I sometimes have to try harder and repeat the perfomance until satisfied.  After all the delay in the focus assist light is just another log to be hurdled in capturing the image and doubtfully faster if you are in a hurry.

Furthermore stage lighting can make or break this sort of imaging depending where it is directed at any given time.  Where it is perfect for the purpose it shows up extremely well and on a few images where the stage lighting has not caught the actors faces to advantage this shows just as inevitably.

Ideally a second advantage of a very long fast lens in this type of work is that it helps isolate the lighting effect into smaller areas and therefore makes metering more reliable.  I also have found brightly lit full stage easier to handle than a more subdued spotlit type lighting (with dark surrounding areas).  Also the EV usually has to be adjusted to perfection on the day and changed if the lighting varies.

Very nice. I have taken lesser equipment and been turned away due to security interpreting "Professional equipment" as being any camera that takes an interchangeable lens, so you can count yourself lucky you dealt with on-site security with a little better than the standard comon sense you can typically get from a security crew.

Thanks, it was a kids show so I don't think they were too strict, just ticket scanner people at the doors not security. I still noticed the occasional flash and AF assist lamps going off during the show though

It seemed to be de rigueur for photo-heavy postings, maybe not that relevant these days

Nice clear shots, but DPR has a rule of 10 images per post

All the best and nice shots.

Danny.

You did well.  The Beauty and the Beast images look pretty much like the show we saw at Disney World in Florida last fall (no surprise there).  I did not have a fast long lens and did not do as well.

Re: Oly 75 1.8 at the theatre (warning: 29 images)

drsonic, can you estimate how many rows back you were from the stage?

I've been looking around for a good low light, stage/concert lens, but have always thought the 75/1.8 was a little too short for the theaters I've been in.

If I knew about how many rows back your seats were, I could estimate whether the 75/1.8 would work for the seats I tend to get.

Hi, below is the floor plan, we were in row Z which is towards the back of the yellow section. Not sure of the number of rows as the row numbering is not just A-Z. This is the room: http://mcec.com.au/plan-an-event/rooms/plenary/

Thanks. The 75mm definitely has more reach than I gave it credit for.
