Ok - so you disagree that the G10 may have an advantage in any area because images are noisy by your standards from ISO 200 on, based on your brother's camera.

Got it.

Very nice informative post Carl. I appreciate that you have first hand experience with most of the G generation cameras and their differences. I hope to find a clean G15 soon as I like the jpeg output.

Thanks for the post with images..good write up.

Glad it was/is helpful :). G15's are at bargain prices- and they will pretty much hold at those prices from here on out. Mint G10's are going up in value, G12's are holding steady, and I expect G15's and G16's to do the same. They are sought after cameras that give users a real rangefinder like handling experience- done right. Not too many cameras out there like the G's. Very appealing from G9, and especially G10 onward I say.

I won't go for a G series camera without a viewfinder. I've got an S90 but I won't be getting the G7X sorry to say. To me that camera is just an S series camera with a G series label- I think Canon made a mistake with the naming.

Today's G10 Image- Using multi layer raw processing

Shot this morning

Won't go into major details of my processing workflow as I'm in transition using new techniques with processing a single raw file- but so far, the results I'm seeing are excellent. I've been incorporating area CA removal, multi layer sharpening, stuff like that. Know that my style is not heavy handed- I prefer natural as possible for almost all my processing.

Just love the edge to edge sharpness from the G10's sensor, it really gives me a case of the grins especially when I'm doing 100% enlargements. Outwards from the center you'll start to see some color fringing and CA, but it's far from bad and both are easily correctable (this image is corrected for Cyan colored CA's).

I'd be hard pressed to find a DSLR/Lens combo at 3x the original MSRP of the G10 that could match or beat the output of the G10 when properly processed. Im especially taking into account optical quality, and using the G10 at base ISO of course. If you bracket shots on a tripod and combine 3 images, you can really increase the color depth and DR- if you're so inclined- hint hint.

Just out of curiosity

I'd like to see what ISO you think this is from the G10. It's also underexposed by a full stop. I used a layer in PS so the exif would be removed. Only chroma NR was done in ACR at 10 on the slider (in other words, almost no NR at all), no Luminesence NR was done. Low kitchen lighting of a dark subject (g16).

It's your opinion, you don't have to be sorry for it. But if you think you've changed mine, sorry to disappoint you.

One thing about the G10/11/12/15 Lens is that its sharp edge to edge , end to end wideopen - the less said about the G7X`s optic the better from the reports and samples shown .

The G7X is hardly a Speed demon either and doesn`t have age for an excuse like the G10 does (and the G10 was actually faster than the G11 in operation !!) . The G7X could have been an excellent RX100 killer ........ err, it wasn't and speed was one of the major complaints

Adam... the reports of the softness of the G7X's lens are a totally bad rap. Is it as sharp end to end as the RX100 m3 .. no it isn't. Certainly is as sharp and sharper than a G9, G10 or 12, not as sharp as a G1X.

Download these full size so you can get the real feel. Point out the softness in this image for me.

or this one.

Amazing to me how people who have never held the camera, let alone shot with it, talk smack about it.

.. Into a G7X quality debate, do we really? Could be a great subject for a new thread however, if you wish Martin. Just a thought.

Don't need to Carl..  I'm well aware of what it will do and what the G's that came before it were capable of producing.  Besides, having a discussion with those who "heard" but never used is a fruitless endeavor.

I recently purchased a Canon refurb G15, and I'm really liking it. I still have a G9 and G11, and am torn on whether to sell either of them. I bought my G15 for $220, and a week later they dropped the price to about $190. Today I see they boosted the price to $250...supply and demand?

Re: Today's G10 Image- Using multi layer raw processing

Carl,

A good while back, I compared the G9 to the G10 and found the resolution is very close, with just a tad more contrast in the G9.  At the time, I put that down to the G9 having the better lens, offsetting the G10's higher pixel count.  That was at base ISO; but at ISO 400, the G9 resolved more, although with more shadow noise.

I wasn't crazy about the G11 & G12; but I'm quite happy with the G15.  My biggest gripe with the G9 (and the G7), was the badly designed OVF.  The axis of the OVF crossed that of the lens at 5-6 feet!!!  So no parallax at 5'; but a huge amount at 100 yds.  My first outdoor shots with my new G7 were from the deck of a cruise ship in Ft. Lauderdale.  The shot was of a draw bridge over the Inter-Coastal waterway.  It was open at the time, and all that showed in the review was the tips of the raised bridge decks.  A shot of a liner going out showed just the top of the funnel.  I was just sick.  I eventually learned to compensate and had the G7 for almost four years.  The G9 had the exact same issues with the OVF.  That was fixed in the G10 and all later G's.

Yep normal fluctuations in pricing sounds like to me. Good deal you got there. I thought my G16 for 360 (no tax no shipping) was decent too.

Today's G10 Image

A sort of Japanese pencil drawing intent in the processing- a deviation of my normal "natural" processing.

Nice image/effects. Do you remember this article?

It speaks a lot about the G10 image qualities.

Also remember that article!

And remember a beautiful sunrise with many boats in the harbor, did not get good results with a more advanced camera. Just took some quick shots with G10, almost perfect, not much to fix. Always ready when the light is strange or beautiful. Now and then there is no time to fiddle with the camera, time for G10. And a good thing, with a little practice even amateurs can get a lot out of it.

Yep, and advanced users can squeeze even a little more ...
