Re: Olympus 40-150 f2.8 PRO

Sorry to hear that.  It's been fairly regularly available on USA Amazon.

Yes, I know that.  I was just comparing size/weight of what I used to carry around.

LTZ-- well, I don't know about 3X sharper, but I definitely agree that the Oly is sharper-- and smaller/lighter by quite a bit.

Re: Any thoughts on bokeh quality?

CallNature;  bokeh is one of those lens properties that is so difficult to explain much less quantify that it's rather mysterious IMO.  Then too, it's sort of subjective-- we all know what it means but it's hard to describe.

I've had 2 outdoor shoots with a wide range of subjects and apertures and so far I'd say it's relatively good, but can be relatively bad.  Look at those two gull pics and there is a huge difference in the quality/character of the bokeh.  The one w/ where the 2X digital TC was used, bokeh is quite good IMO, but the one w/o, bokeh is bad to the point of "nervous" and I don't like it.  But that's a rather extreme set of photos.

I was really very impressed with the sharpness of the 2X TC shot though (it's only available in jpeg though)-- that's a 600mm equivalent shot at f2.8 and it appears equal in sharpness to the one shot at 300mm w/o the 2X TC-- lighting was good and SS very high.  And as the 2X TC crops from the center of the lens-- well that should be the sharpest part.

Back to bokeh.  When shooting mushrooms at close distances and large f-stops (2.8 to 5.6) I thought the bokeh was OK to good depending on back ground and lighting.

Don't know if that helps, but those are my thoughts on bokeh of the 40-150 f2.8-- so far;>).

Re: Olympus 40-150 f2.8 PRO

Arbuz;  well, my last 100-400 L was used on the 6D. so 400mm is 400mm in FF.  You're right re use on APSC bodies though, and that's where the 100-400 really comes into its own.  I also used it on 60D and 70D bodies.

I should have commented on AF of 40-150 f2.8

It's good, plenty fast in good light, but not SWD fast.  To me, and more importantly, it's very accurate.  I did an extensive mushroom shoot in light down to ISO 3200 at 1/30 sec f2.8.  This was under a heavy tree (spruce) canopy.  AF was quite good as long as the lens had something to focus on-- meaning contrasting lines.  without decent contrast in details it would hunt some, but overall I was really pleased with AF in pretty dim lighting-- and especially with accuracy when it did lock AF.

I didn't try AF on fast moving subjects e.g. BIF.

Re: One more w/ detail

I have used the Sigma 150mm on a D7000 and the Oly 40-150mm F2.8 Pro lenses- the Oly Lens is about the same size as the Sigma and except for the very close focussing distance is far more versatile. I think the quality of pictures are on par. I can't imagine many situations in which I would prefer the Sigma 150 over the Oly 40-150mm.
