Re: E-PM1 vs E-PM2 vs GF5

One more to throw in - the GF5 non-power zoom (while a bit larger than I was looking at) can be had for $175 open box - while its bigger than I wanted it seems like a great deal

ETA: It must have the same 12m sensor as the GF3...

Sorry one more - I can get a new A5000 w/lens (I know its not an m43) for $250. For any with experience, how would that compare?

If image quality and low light you are after then A5000 is superior, I own both formats Sony Nex 5n and Oly EPM1.

Get the Sigma 19mm and 30mm and Sony 50mm f1.8, these lenses are selling very cheap on the second hand market. These combos will give superior performance over the E-PM1 or EPM2 plus kit lens.

Panny claims it is updated - maybe controls noise better but is still a 12.1

The IQ of the Panasonic 20mm/1.7 is amazing on E-PM2 body, it's one of the sharpest lenses in m43 and is on par with the Sony 50mm/1.8. Used 20mm/f1.7 mkI is also quite cheap these days.

While A6000 has approximately a half stop ISO advantage over E-PM2 sensor, the Panasonic 20mm is ~1.5 stops faster then both Sigmas, which gives a full one stop low light advantage over the A6000 with Sigmas.

I'd recommend to go with used E-PM2 + used Panasonic 20mm instead of the E-PM1 + kit (or any similarly priced Sony camera, if that matters).

Picked none of the above

So after all that I saw a gently used GX1 w/standard zoom lens for $220 and jumped. Thanks everyone for your help - I would have bought a horrid camera

Congratulations and enjoy your new purchase.

But, just a caution. There are greater and lesser cameras out there. Because one camera may be "better" than another, it doesn't make the other camera "horrid."

Spend enough time on this forum and you may find yourself regarding your GX-1 as a "horrid" camera. It's not, but there is no shortage of critics of any particular model here. If you get caught up in comparing hardware specs, you'll miss the "big picture" in what it takes to become a better photographer. Start down that road and you'll be pursuing hardware improvement at the expense of improving your experience.

This is a hardware forum, alas, and there is, in my opinion, far too much focus on technical minutia as advocates for one camera try to "prove" their opinions to the advocates of other cameras.

In the final analysis, it is the photographer and not the camera.

Enjoy your GX-1, learn its strengths and weaknesses, learn what kind of photographer you wish to be and how to work those strengths and weaknesses into your photography.

Shoot. Shoot. Shoot.

I had the G3 which is essentially the same camera as the GX1 in a different package.

It is a fine camera and you will do well with it.

Next the lenses...

Thanks - it reminded me a lot of my old 600si which was(is) a great camera

GX1

Opened the box today - previous owner took great care of it.

Holy Mini Camera Batman! I knew it was going to be smaller than my old 600si but I had no idea it would be that small. So glad I didn't go with a GF3/E-PM1

Thanks again everyone!
