Canon EOS Models

Which of the current models of Canon EOS cameras do you like the most?  I am thinking of upgrading, and I might stay put with what I have.  I am sitting on the fence right now, I am not really interested in anything above the 7D, becuase of price.

Canon SL1 because lite weight. Love it.

It depends on what I am doing and shooting:

Wildlife or fast moving kids: 7D with no hesitation

Backpacking or hiking: SL1 because so size, weight and quality.

Re: Canon EOS Models

For the price and specifications, I vote for the Canon T3i (which I bought recently for about $499 USD body only with a kit lens for $50).  After that, I would consider the Canon 70D.  I didn't know if the Canon T3i (600D) would work well on my new Tamron 150-600mm lens, but it so far has been excellent even at the higher ISO levels.

DxO Mark shows the image quality and ISO performance a little better for the Canon T2i (550D) and Canon T3i (600D) cameras over the Canon T4i (650D) and Canon T5i (700D) cameras.  I don't know if I believe everything that DxO Mark says, but anyway that is what they describe.  The Canon SL1 (100D) camera is good but it looked a little too small for me.  I would not even consider either the Canon T3 (1100D) or the Canon T5 (1200D) cameras for any price.  The Canon 60D would be excellent also if the price was right.  If I saw one near $499, I might have purchased that one instead of the Canon T3i.

What is it about your current camera that you are unhappy with?

Canon's APS-c sensors are getting a bit long in the tooth by digital standards but all the current models will have lower noise at more usable ISO ranges as well as higher pixel density than the sensor in your camera. By that standard all the Canons are all significant upgrades from what you are using and you should notice that improvement immediately both in jpeg and RAW images. Video capabilities may or may not be important to you.

Re: Canon EOS Models

Good question about the XT and I will tell.  The XT is old and it has problems here and there, sometimes the shutter does not work quite right and sometimes I do not get a picture, the sensor does not work right.  I asked in a previous thread about what criteria forum members use to decide when to upgrade and I got an answer that really made sense: when there is a feature(s) in the new model that I am willing to pay that many dollars for.  So I have been thinking about the current models and if I am willing to pay for those feature set.  Why am I asking the current question? Because sometimes the crowd is smarter than the individual and now what I am trying to do is get a sense for what the crowd thinks.  So now you see my logic?  What I will probably do is look at the feature set for the winner and see if I am willing to pay that amount of dollars for that feature set or if I want to stay put.

Re: Canon EOS Models

Any Canon with the 18 MP sensor or better - starts with the T2i, then T3i, T4i - these are the ones I have and like them all.  I would not really recommend T3 or T5.

If money is an issue and if you could still find a T2i that would be a great choice.  I use my T2i for 'hazardous duty' and my 'beach cam' and keep it in my car most of the time, but it is still a very capable camera that can perform very close to my T3i and T4i.

+1 for the 70D if you can swing it.  Head and shoulders above the others on your list (re: IQ, Autofocus, Video capability, Feature set, etc etc).

Otherwise the T5i (or its older twin T4i), which are also very capable.

I have some samples from the 70D and T4i (including 100% crops) in my galleries...

I couldn't agree with you more. I also like its compactness and the STM lenses...not to mention the excellent image quality. It's a lot of fun to shoot with.

Re: Canon EOS Models

Well I have had this 1100d (T3) since May 2014 and I happy with it even though others don't like them

I am no pro and have never used the better ones but maybe one day I might also want to upgrade my camera.

Re: Canon EOS Models

The Canon T3 (1100D) is just not up-to-date and it's missing a lot of features.  Sometimes I'll use my 10mp Olympus DSLR cameras or one of the older P&S cameras that I have, just for fun.  When you start using one of these 18mp DSLR cameras that are more advanced, it will make a lot of sense of what we are saying.

I found a 4mp Olympus Camedia camera a while back at a recycle center (maybe it was 2 years ago).  I only paid $5 (USD) for it.  I just had to get rechargeable batteries for it.  It even had a 128mb Smart Media card in it, which was a lot of memory in those days.  If I wasn't so busy, playing around with my latest Tamron telephoto lens and all of these Canon DSLR cameras, I might have even considered taking some more photos with my 6mp Sony H2 camera too.

Re: Canon EOS Models

Not real surprising since the T3 is the lowest of the Rebel models.  If I spent more dollars I would expect more in value in exchange.

Primarily gains in accuracy, speed, consistency, tracking, AF points, low light acquisition, and the like.

Plus the ability to use Live View, with a touchscreen (and/or an articulating LCD).

With the 70D you gain Video autofocus that doesn't hunt, and is completely silent with most STM lenses.  It's truly a wonder to behold.

Additionally the 70D doubles its AF sampling rate when shooting macros.  Finally making autofocus a (viable) reality for us macro shooters...

"Crazy" bee on a hot sunny day.  70D with 100L Macro using autofocus.   Click on "Original size"

Other difficult subjects become much easier to capture as well...

BIF against water.  100% crop.  Click on "Original size"

And more pedestrian subjects are just a breeze...

Very accurate and consistent AF.  Full-sized image @ ISO 800 (no post processing).  Click on "Original size"

I like to use a single AF point with AI Servo engaged (100% of the time, for all subjects).  Back-button focus is enabled, and autofocus is disassociated from the shutter button.  I find AF to be very fast, consistent, and extremely versatile when implemented this way.

Best of luck,

R2

Re: Canon EOS Models

You do realize my wife is gonna hate you all as now I also want to have a play with a newer camera than my 1100d (but only had it since May) so now saving for the Tamron 150-600mm and maybe look at a new body, either 70D or a 600D if I read all the comments right.

What ever happened to the good old Kodak Instamatic days lol life was so easy.

Re: Canon EOS Models

It costs nothing to play with the new models, it only costs when you buy the new models.  You need to look at the added capabilities of hte new models and see if htey add anything that you are willing to pay for.  Since you have had your current camera since spring I would doubt that there would be anything worth the pain of upgrading.  I would not plan on upgrading again for at least spring of 2018 and only t hen if there is something added to the models that are worth it.

My recommendation would be to go look at electronic book readers in stead, they are a lot cheaper then camers are.  There are three different models of kindles and sell for $75, $120 and $200.  The model is slected depending on your reaidng environment, get hte $75 basic if you generally read under a reading lamp, the $120 if you have a tendency, like me to read in darken environments and the $200 only if you need premium features.
