HELP! Canon EOS 450D Not working

Hi guys,

I'd like to firstly point out that I am beginner with DSLRs and I may use the wrong terms so forgive me!

I need help figuring out whats happening to my camera. It started with the light meter not functioning properly. The meter will be in the center when I change the aperture but the pictures will come out super exposed.

Now my shutter button is 'locked' and I can't take any photos and I noticed that the light meter in the view finder is dead. However I am still getting a functioning screen. I can't even open live view.

Please help! Thank you in advance!

I suspect you haven't received any replies because there is not much to say except to suggest that you call Canon service and see what they say.

Is this a new camera to you, or have you had it a while? Do you have the instruction manual? If not, can download from Canon USA: http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/3/0300000933/01/EOSRXSi-EOS450D_EN.pdf

How old is the battery? If 2+ years old consider replacing.

I need help figuring out whats happening to my camera. It started with the light meter not functioning properly. The meter will be in the center when I change the aperture but the pictures will come out super exposed.

Over exposed? What exposure mode? what lens? using the built-in flash? or a speedlite in the hotshoe (which make/model)?

Can you post sample pics with exposure info?

In Av and P it's normal for the meter to be centered at zero as you change the aperture. The camera compensates by adjusting the shutter speed (and/or ISO if you've set AUTO ISO).

Now my shutter button is 'locked' and I can't take any photos and I noticed that the light meter in the view finder is dead.

Is the entire bottom row of info in the viewfinder blank or unresponsive, or just the meter scale? Is it possible you've inadvertently set Mirror Lock Up (pp. 94, 157 of the XSi/450D instruction manual)? Press of the shutter button flips the mirror up and viewfinder goes dead. 2nd press will activate the shutter to take the pic. If no 2nd press within 30 seconds, then it should self-cancel and drop the mirror back down without taking a shot.

However I am still getting a functioning screen. I can't even open live view.

Don't know, other than Live View has to be Enabled in the Set Up2 menu, and is available only in the "Creative Zone" exposure modes: P, Tv, Av, M, A-DEP.

Call Canon Service

Something is wrong with the camera. I would call or email Canon Service. If its minor, they're fix it for free. If its costly, they're enrolled you into Canon Loyalty Program, which give you an option to buy another Canon DSLR at super heavy discount.

Lastly.  Try these steps.

1. Remove battery and SD cards (could be the card going bad)

2. Let it sit for a day

3. Put the battery back.  If power-on try, RESET all camera setting and RESET all customerization

If that doesn't work, it's time to call Canon Service.

What mode is your exposure dial on?  Try "M" (manual mode), and see if you can move the meter by adjusting shutter.  If you can't activate the shutter, turn autofocus off on the lens, and attempt to take a shot using manual focus in "M" mode.  If that is not possible, the camera is defective.  If you can take a shot w/ manual focus, you probably have hit one of the rear focus buttons accidentally and locked the camera.

These cameras aren't worth much now. Maybe $200, certainly not $300.

Re: HELP! Canon EOS 450D Not working

They may be not worth uch, but this photo camera still remains a very nice one for the very beginners - myself, I entered and developped my photography with my small Canon 450

The camera was very easy to use and required almost no maintenance - and at the very beginning, I had just 2 kit lenses, not more

What was also nice is that this camera makes you feel the limits - if you become an advanced user, than you would feel it with this camera, and uf not - well, it will be sufficient for you, and you did not spent a fortune for your photo equipment

From that time, I do no longer have pictures, just a very few ones which one may still see on my very first blog http://www.pbase.com/irika- all shoot with my very first Canon 450 D
