24-70 F4 vs. 25-105 F4

Sorry if this conversation has been had before, but curious about IQ difference if anyone has switched from 24-105 F4 to 24-70 F4.  The market is flooded now with cheap new 24-70's as people are buying with kits at retail, then selling privately.  It will cost me about $100 to switch from 24-105 to the 24-70.  I rarely use the long end of the 24-105 (ie. 70-105).

Thanks

Re: 24-70 F4 vs. 25-105 F4

while 24-105 f4.0IS with longer reach is very good, i have heard really good things about the new 24-70 f4.0 tele, i have the f2.8 version and it is stellar. most of my photos fall in the 24-70 FL range and that is what makes this lens so valuable and resilient to me. however, it would be a very difficult decision to make if i had the 24-105 f4.0IS and 24-70 f4.0 good luck.

cheerz.

I just purchased a kit with the 24-70 F4. Haven't had much time to play with it, but doubt it will get much use as the focal length is too short for my preferences... Unless the images shout sharpness at me that I just can't live without. I will definitely keep my 24-105, I have a very sharp copy; that one isn't going anywhere.

Judging by your signature, if you are looking for one for your 60D, neither is really a good choice.

I have both. The 24-70 is a much better lens -- better IQ, less vignetting, and very usable macro function. But both are designed for FF. If you only have APS-C, I'd consider the 18-135 IS STM or 15-85 IS.

Re: 24-70 F4 vs. 25-105 F4

Since you already have a 70-200, but all means get the 24-70. That's what I have, and am reasonably happy with it. I never really considered the 24-105 because it is optically not quite as good, and has more distortion on the wide end. Also, the 24-70 has the new IS, up to 4 stops I think, whereas the 24-105 IS is good to 2 stops. Not to mention that the macro mode can be useful.

But I agree with the previous post; unless you have a full frame camera you probably should have either the 17-55 f/2.8 or the 15-85.

If it's a *Single* Lens Reflex, why do I need so many lenses?

Re: 24-70 F4 vs. 25-105 F4

The 24-70 f/4 launched at a very steep price...with white-box brand new 24-105s going for $700 or so, it was better value.

Now that the 24-70 IS is bundled as a kit with several cameras for a very decent price, it is a decent proposition too.

Since you shoot APS-C, the 105 might still be a better option; on APS-C, it avoids much of the vignetting and high distortion at 24mm that it suffers from on FF. And the extra reach can be pretty handy too.

loving the macro on the 24-70 f4.   Slightly soft at 50mm, but its great otherwise.

I'm not entirely sold on the idea of the macro capability in the 24-70 f/4L IS to be honest...it's good that it's there, but the working distance is very small. It's not going to compete with a proper macro lens like the 100L for any serious macro stuff.

Re: 24-70 F4 vs. 25-105 F4

For a crop sensor camera?  No question, look at the 17-55IS.  In addition to the L-class image quality, it goes much wider on a crop sensor than either 24-xxx lens.  Another big plus for me is the wider max aperture; I shoot in areas where lighting is marginal, and even if you do not use the widest aperture, autofocus makes use of it!  I get noticeably faster and more accurate AF with my f/2.8 lenses than with my f/4 lenses.  You also have that improved DoF control if you ever need or want it.

Re: 24-70 F4 vs. 25-105 F4

my opinion would be skewed, due to the fact that I think my 24-105L is superb, and provides fantastic IQ on both FF and Crop... so much so I doubt I will ever let my copy go... for this reason I see no need for a 24-70...

Update on this:

I made the trade and got the 24-70.  It's pretty good.  As many people say, it seems just a little sharper than the 24-105.  I've also ditched my filter - going naked!

And for those who say L lenses shouldn't go on an APS-C camera, you need to get over that.  That's not a real thing.

Cheers!
