Absolutlely worth it

Id like to start off that its been a long winding road to get to this lens and Im so glad I got there in the end.

I originally looked at getting the Canon 17-55mm lens but read up on its value to price ratio and horror stories on IS problems Dust, weight etc etc

I originally bought the 15-85mm lens and loved its wide angle ability and sharpness however I am not a flash shooter and had alot of issues shooting indoor especially video. One day When shooting video on a cheapo tripod (never again) it fell to the ground on carpet and the barrel was distorted. A costly mistake,

Then I started looking back at my original options and was waiting and waiting for sigma to make a 17-50 2.8 art lens but this didn't come and I thought id take the risk with the 17-55 canon for my walk about lens on a trip I was about to embark on.

I can honestly say its up there with my 12-60MM Zuiko I use to have on four thirds. The feel the focus and images that came out of this thing just amazed me when reviewing them in Light Room. I took 800 shots on an NYC trip and every one of those shots came out in focus and tac sharp alot of it was shooting f2.8. Simply put it never failed me.

Half way through my travel being clumsy me I swang my camera bag around without knowing the top was still open and the camera and lens fell out onto hard ground. Guess what the lens wasnt damaged one bit.

So will I reccomend this lens? Yes. my trip wouldnt have been the same without it. Is the lens heavy? yes but I never felt the weight I would reccomend getting a hand grip and take off the camera strap all together. So in conclusion go with your first instinct dont bother with third party versions and get the canon 17-55mm. Get the canon lens hood too. that's what saved my lens!

Feel Free to check out my shots with this lens from my trip :
