Canon 10-18mm STM, 50D with kit 17-85mm

I'm thinking about getting the Canon 10-18mm STM lens to play with but being a long time beginner, will there be a noticeable difference from the bottom end of my 17-85mm that came with my 50D?

I hope my question makes sense.

James

There will be  a huge difference from  17 to 10 mm.

Remember to get closer than you think possible. Try including foreground subject with an interesting background. Plan on a substantial learning curve and spend some time finding ways to make use of it.

Some people get hooked on the perspective and others never take to it.

Lord yes!

The numbers may be smaller, but they are more dramatic. For example, there's not much difference between 85mm and 100mm on the short telephoto end. But there is a HUGE difference between 10mm and 17mm, even if the focal length is only half the difference as in the tele example. A 10-18 will open up an whole new "wide" world!

I picked it up last night and can not wait to play with it.

Thank you for your replies!

Great! Have fun!

Best advise i can offer for using an ultra-wide:

Avoid simply thinking of it as a way of it as a way of "getting in everything". Such shots are both busy and boring. Just as you would do with an normal or telephoto lens, KNOW YOUR SUBJECT (which is NOT "everything") and use the characteristics of that lens in a way that best reveals your subject. It's a very different mindset from long lenses. and takes practice. One thing you can do, however, is to study other photographs made with superwide lenses and determine why any given shots works or does not work.

Best of luck
