High ISO Pictures from 7D Mark II
4

Just got my new 7DM2 and have mainly been interested in how it performs at high ISO. Weather cooperated with very overcast skies--LOL. Here are a couple of shots from the backyard at an ISO of 12,800!! They were shot in manual with my Canon 70-200 f/2.8L IS II + 2X TC. Files were converted in DPP 4.1 with the set presets and NO other correction except lens correction. I never even shot at ISO 12,800 with the 7D because of the noise--ISO 1600 was bad enough. These are almost printable files (overlooking the crappy composition and subject matter!) What do you think?

That's not noise I see. I see grain. Some freeking good film-like grain, something so pleasing to the eye, so easy to work with, so.... damn I have to get this camera.

Thanks for sharing ! Excellent pics

Hi Catherine

Those are really good at ISO12800. You have posted links to the original size, for convenience I posting links to the large size, from there anyone can click on original.

And if you work a bit more both can be cleared up more without sacrificing detail, I just tried on the first bird.

Thanks for sharing.

These images look great! Congratulations on your purchase.

I'm afraid to go above ISO 800 on my 7D because the image really starts to fall apart especially if you have to crop more than 10-15%.

I see that these photos were shot at 1/1250th sec @ f/8, ISO 16000, suggesting a fair amount of available light. I find that high ISO images in decent light look far better than the same ISO under poor light.

If possible, it would be nice to see ISO 16000 in a dimly lit room or something similar.

Warm regards.

For an APS C it's great at 12800 iso.

3200 iso should give very good prints in A3 or even A2 with a good post processing

My try with quick processing shows that you can get a nice result even with ISO 12800.

Thanks for your note--I set the speed higher because I don't use a tripod and shoot everything handheld and was hoping for some flying birds and need that speed to get sharp pictures. The ISO was 12800 to get a properly exposed picture. In a dimly lit room you would have to either lower the aperture, raise the ISO, or lower the speed to get a properly exposed picture. Otherwise you will get an underexposed picture and more noise. If you go to the link below you can see a picture I shot in low light (side window) in my office of things on my Wacom tablet but I was using the Sigma Art lens at f4, 1/60, ISO 4000 for a full resolution.

Wow!  Great result.  I've only used Lightroom to process my files which is unavailable right now so I imported DPP 4.1 and am totally unfamiliar with it.  I guess I could try more aggressive noise reduction in it and then it has the option to export as a TIFF file to PS where other noise reduction programs could also be used (which I've never tried such as some of the NIK and Topaz software).  What did you use?

Scott Kelby posted some pics taken in a locker room (pre-production model) at 16,000 ISO. They look better than my 7D at about 800.

I shoot a lot of HS sports, and coveted the 5DIII for the high ISO. The poor lighting at our small HS forces me to shoot my 7D at 4000-5000 ISO, and am still probably a tad under-exposed. But with the improved FPS for the 7DII at half the price of the 5DIII, I think this is my new body...

I sure hope we see an update for Lightroom soon.  Any idea how long it usually takes Adobe to support a new model?

That's not how Adobe works. They release a new version every 3 month unless required such as with a "major bug". Since going cloud, they've changed their procedure.

First they release the beta for ACR and the DNG convertor. Lightroom gets updated when they release the final/ready for consumption of the version of Photoshop.

Is DPP 4.1 required to process the RAW? I don't have a 64 bit OS.

The latest version of DPP 3, 3.14.41, supports the 7D2.

That is impressive for APS C at 12,800.

Like others I'd like to know your workflow for this image.
