I have funds for either NX30 or Galaxy NX? or 85mm f1.4? Opinions please

I have the chance to purchase one of these cameras-they are both the same price to buy for me so i am just wondering which one will benefit me the most. As far as image quality and AF i think they are pretty much like for like. I guess its the big display that is tempting me towards the NX. I am not sure really if i would take any advantage of the android OS.

Perhaps switching to touch screen only control might take a while to get used to. Does/Has anybody owned either and chosen one over the other.

I realise the NX30 has a beter EVF but i dont tend to use them unless i really cant see the screen.

Most of my shots are portrait and kids with the 30mm on my nx3000.

Perhaps i should invest in quality glass and there is none better than the 85mm f1.4

In fact many people say the nx3000 images are better than the NX30,NX so maybe opting to invest in glass might be a better option.

The 85mm is quite a specialised lens though and maybe the 30mm is good enough for me.

Any comments appreciated.

I doubt that NX3000 takes visibly better pictures.

I'd recommend NX45mm first. Very good lenses for kids, not bad for portraits.

85mm is very good but as you said, very specialised.

Any comments appreciated.

Ragarding camera, any will do. Screen on galaxy is very big indeed but also fixed. What camera you have currently?

As stated in first post i have the nx3000. I currently use the 30mm so the 45mm is not really a big difference from the 30mm. Perhaps its the AF speed that would be beneficial on the 45mm.

I would be keeping the nx3000 as my backup so maybe it will complement the galaxy nx more than the nx30 as it also has a flip screen.. Damn its that big screen that is tempting.

I'd say it's quite a difference for portraits.

Ok..

if you are shooting kids you need to ask yourself if the 85 is right.. it is a tight lens not super tight but enough that it will be very different then the 30 and it isn't a fast focusing lens. If it is right... and you think you are going to be able to use it go for it..

The NX30 is a good camera. but are there features you feel that you will use that you don't have on the NX3000? if there are that might be the best all around choice. Particularly as the processing is better, and the focusing might be easier.

the Galaxy NX... NO NO NO, NO NO NO. NO... NO NO ... NO .... NO NO NO... NO. NO NO NO. ... NO. no. I'd stay away from it.

How focusing can be easier? Maybe slower, but not easier.

Convincing argumentation.

Yeah i know the NX gets some bad press but its got the nx300 guts and a super screen for composing. Also its about £380 from my seller which i am sure would have effected the review scores if it was not over £1000 at time of review.

I think 85mm is great for static and studio work but might be troublesome in general use-even though it is a stunning piece of glass.

Re: I have funds for either NX30 or Galaxy NX? or 85mm f1.4? Opinions please

45mm seems a very good focal length for children as it is no too tight but will give you background defocus. 50mm can be on the edge and a bit tight so I think Samsung thought long and hard about 45mm. It was originally from the rumour mill going to be 55mm.

85mm seems more for studio type shots with static subjects, which with children probably means bored expressions, especially difficult as at f1.4 the depth of field is going to be pretty shallow.

30mm is a great focal length for general use so a new NX30 might be useful so you can alternate with your kit zoom on a different body without the faff of lens changing.

I don't have the 85mm, but I do have all the other primes and the 45mm is very good. I like it for its fast focusing on people and for videos. I will even use it for landscapes and use photo stitching when necessary. Its corner to corner resolution is unmatched by my other primes including the 30mm. I like it on both my NX20 and NX300. It's not pancake small, but it is still compact, very lightweight and durable.

A few samples if you interested: NX45mm photos

Good luck and have fun.

In agreement galaxy is beautiful screen for composition but buffer clearance is painful wait for raw. Nx3000 appear have most mature hardware and firmware of current nx generation and best from what I see. 85mm is beautiful for portraits but depend if you need and can live the focal size. If you need special focal size, then 85mm  is best. If need general use, I think S zoom lens is best. 50mm is long enough for 20 ft  crop shot.

I must agree with Jennyrae. Get the "S 16-50mm F2.0-2.8" Look at tests that were made with the NX3000. Great results. The price and value of the NX and NX30 will continue to come down, especially when the NX1 is on the market.  But the value of that lens will remain high, both monetarily but more importantly for its high quality images.

Re the choice between the NX and NX 30 , personally would stay away from the NX.

As with many things in life a great photograph has strong appeal for what is NOT in the picture.

I'm not a fan of the Android OS cameras and would choose the NX30 if given that choice. I have the NX30 and like it quite a lot. I also have and love the 85 1.4 but it isn't my most commonly used lens. As others have stated, it's basically a specialty lens...a damn good one but not one you'll keep on the camera. The 16-50 2/2.8 S is the lens I use most often. It's good enough that it has replaced the primes except when I want to travel light.

Thanks for all the input. The 16-50 f 2-2.8 is way out of my budget. It's almost double! Hehe.

iirc the NX3000 is a Contrast only Focus where as the NX30 has AFII PDAF which could speed up the focus in some situations, and get the focus right in situations that the NX3000 would have a hard time.. that is what I meant by easier.

Then 85mm seem plausible choice due to portrait needs. I say this because bodies go cheaper over time and lens not.

My opinion: new body with same sensor does not help to shot better photos.

EVF would be useful outside on the sun, tiltable screen is for macros and unusual perspectives... Do you need that for "portraits and kids"? Most probably not!

So you should better invest in new lenses, I think.

45mm has very quick AF and is less specialised compared to 85mm.

Not sure if there is much point in upgrading to NX30 from NX3000.

Lenses look like a better choice at the moment, especially considering the imminent change of sensor and camera generation in the NX lineup.

45 mm is probably a better option for more general-purpose shots than 85 1.4. 85 mm has both small DoF wide open and quite narrow, while it's both large, heavy and pricey. It's a dedicated portrait lens.

In my opinion you are asking the wrong question to the wrong audience.

First, you should ask yourself just what do you need to achieve with your photography.

Once you know this you can easily determine/ask which gear will help you fill your needs.

So take the time to do a self-evaluation of your photographic needs, this will put you in good stead.

Thanks all. I have opted for the galaxy nx and the 45mm f1.8.

I am going to sell my nx3000 body as i have a ex2f for snapshots and now have the Galaxy Nx with 30mm,45mm and 16-50 pz.

I managed to get the Galaxy Nx and 45mm for £450.

Thanks again for the reply's.
