other small sensor cameras - the Olympus Stylus 1 (and 1s)

Some interesting thoughts, certainly agree the 2/3 sensor was not developed more, the X20 is a great camera, just a little small for my hands (also my biggest problem with the Sony rx100).
The G5x was a camera I liked the look of since launch, at which time it was too expensive for me. I still follow posts regarding it. I have an Olympus OM-D E-M10 which I love and think the G5X would be very similar in hand but with a fixed lens. Thanks for the thought provoking post.

Have an EM 10 II myself and bought with an Olympus 5 year warranty as a special which was good. Just hoping Olympus are still with us in cameras over that period. Who knows what the end of this year will look like. Dartmoor Zoo has announced it only has a couple of weeks money in reserve to run the place and presumably feed the animals.

as noted in comment just posted, I secured a G16 and will test it out with interest.

I also ended up doing quite a bit of internet searching about different cameras ... [bad, hours I'll never get back]

Almost sprung for Canon G5x but decided against that because of bad reviews on lens and battery life.

I also like the look of the E-M10 - it is pretty small, especially with the EZ 14-42 'pancake' zoom, and the benefit of a m4/3 sensor ...

Then, I ran across mention of the Olympus Stylus 1 - a small SLR-like form factor with an apparently quite good EVF (same resolution as the E-M10 looks like) but with a 12 MP 1/1.7 in sensor and a 28-300 (equiv) lens that retracts down flush to the body.

This youtube was interesting (and entertaining) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CyUBH6xyGWU

Also in the comments to that there is a comment that when this guy (Mattias Burling) does a review of an old camera its price suddenly jumps.

I've done a search for one in Australia on ebay and Gumtree - nothing local. Copies from Japan for nearly AUD$800 (seems outrageous). Asking price on Amazon is also really quite high for a camera that old. [I could buy a brand new G5X or E-M10 II or III + lens for that money]

There is a DPReview thread from 2014 comparing G15/16 and Stylus 1 and opinions seem split on image (esp SOOC jpegs) quality https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3698583#forum-post-54010670

I'd be interested in any views of G15/16 users on the Stylus 1.

Got a G16 off ebay (but still local!) for Au$152 which I think was a very good deal. Picked it up tonight, so now to learn the camera

It is a solid little thing, and I think the body is quite good for holding steady(er) even for rear LCD shooting than the smaller cameras like the Sony RX100 or the Canon S120.

super quick (subjective) observation - shutter button (for me) would have been better placed about where the mode dial is
