Swap the 17-40 f4 for the 17-35 2.8 ?

I have the offer to swap my 17-40 f4L for the older, but brighter 17-35 f2.8L. No money in between. Both lenses are in good shape.

Would this be a good trade? It would give me some more leverage indoors and at night, if the general optical quality is the same.

Any opinions are welcome! Thanks.

If I remember correctly the 17-35mm wasn't particularly sharp wide open. Even stopped down not very impressive. The 16-35 that replaced the 17-35 was better and that one performs about equal to the 17-40.

IMO the swap is no good deal. You'll gain a full stop, but lose some quality. The only real low light zoom upgrade to your 17-40 is the 16-35 II.

Regards, Sandor.

Hey

Yes, I have come to that same conclusion after doing more research on the interwebs. I don't think I could accept the loss in sharpness, so I kindly declined.

Weird thing is that the 17-35/2.8 generally sells for more than the 17-40 on ebay.

Thanks for your input.
