Which lens will Canon upgrade next?

What makes you so confident? The only STM prime lenses Canon has announced so far are pancakes, which use slow gear STM due to serious space constraints. The stabilized non-L primes (24/28/35) are all USM.

Because Canon is yet to produce a proper USM-equipped 50.  I know there's an L, but it's AF speed is lower than 1.4.

50 f1.8 IS, 85 f1.8 IS, 20 f2.8 IS and 100 f2 IS will be the next non-L primes to be released.

The 16-35 f2.8 L II lens will be the next L lens that needs replacemet (maybe by a 14-24 f2.8L because I think the rumored 11-24 f4 will remain just a rumor).

The 70-200 f4L II IS to replace the actual lens that has that major USM issue. Thus the f4 new Trinity will be complete.

The 180 f3.5L Macro is also in a need of a refresh.

It is.  That's my point.  It's big and conspicuous when some users would prefer small and black so as to not draw attention.  The L is 40% longer and heavier than the DO.  Many arenas limit by lens length to less 4". The DO qualifies, the L gets turned away.  The DO is small enough to be tucked in a coat pocket as a 2nd lens, the L  and non-L 70-300 cannot.

An IS version of the 24-70 f/2.8L II would be welcome.

- EF 50 and 85 IS (f/2 or faster)
- EF 24-70 2.8L IS
- EF 100-400L II
- EF-M primes

Thinking about it a bit more…I sometimes wish my 70-200 had a bit more reach and would be very interested in an updated 100-400. I don't like the old one, yes I know a bunch of people do. Whatever, increased IQ/optics, better/updated IS, zoom RING, and a constant aperture (I would be happy with f4). The problem is that I'm afraid to ask for this because I can only imagine what it will cost me with all the extras.

200-400/4 costs 12k and weighs 8lb.  How much do you think 100-400/4 would cost and weigh?

I was under the impression that STM technology will ultimately make its way into L lenses, and honestly it's much much better and its still a new technology.

Also, they have been able to make pancakes BECAUSE of STM, so expect to see much shorter primes (35, 50, 85) aswell. You obviously can't have a 85mm pancake, but any "length" the USM motor took up will be shortened by STM implementation. As you get to longer focal lengths the benefit is much less unless you move into DO + STM. That is where the future is: smaller, lighter, faster-focusing lenses.

An inexpensive 500 5.6 would be interesting. Canon must be losing sales to the Tamron 150-600 zoom. An affordable 500 might win folks back.

the DO was optically a dud.  in the real world there isn't the paranoia of white lenses like there is on internet chat rooms.
