Re: G7X All the Rage- But is the G16 Still Tempting?

I've had the G16 since January & like it a lot.  I sold a Sony RX100 to buy the G16, so when Canon announced the G7X, I had a serious #GAS flare up.

i liked the IQ from the rx100 & it early indications are that G7X can match it, with better color & handling.

The G7X is on order, so when I get it, I'll be comparing them & see which I prefer.

Looking forward to your thoughts EJ :). Your thoughts sound like what I'd presume many are also thinking.

For me, no viewfinder = no sale (even if it is the G16 vewfinder).  Others have different opinions; I can only speak for my own needs.

I think viewfinders are pointless on little cameras.

So we differ - I HATE not being able to see clearly what I'm looking at. And with my bifocals, I can't see the screen in focus without craning my head to an unnatural angle. That is one reason that I don't like to use my cell phone camera; I have to guess at what the final picture will look like.  For me a camera of ANY size without a viewfinder is unusable.

Even though it is small, I always use the viewfinder in my G16.

I wear bi-focals. even tri-focals. I have no trouble with my G16 in composing or setting up a shot. Occasionally I do use the OVF, but seldom. Only because it doesn't give a true picture of the whole scene. It's pointless to argue over this because there are only two camps on the OVF in Powershots: those that like it and those that don't. Personally? I can take it or leave it!

What is of more importance though?  Is Canon going to make a G17(?) or some sequel to the G16 (a great camera BTW IMHO)? And given a preference? Yes! Keep the OVF, in spite of its shortcomings.

As for the G7X? I will probably buy one. But only after I see many reports from those who actually plunked down their money for it. For now I'm happy with the S110. A great little carry-around camera BTW.

Re: G7X All the Rage- But is the G16 Still Tempting?

If my money tree sprouted on a regular basis, I'd upgrade every year.  As such I'm still happy with my G15.  When I shoot raw and post process, I think I can get images in decent light that casual observers aren't going to tell the difference between those and that of a DSLR and I still feel it substantially beats a cell phone camera.  I find that with the fast lens under most lighting conditions, I can keep the ISO under 400.  I would miss the viewfinder but more importantly I would miss the hot shoe.  It's nice to use the same flash that I use on my DSLR.  I would miss the extra reach of the G15 as well but I know one can make the argument, you can crop the 20 mp G7X image and probably get the same equivalent range.  So I'll try not to have buyer's envy and instead focus on become a better photographer.

My thinking is that Canon's next similar offering will be some sort of long zoom to compete with the offerings from Sony and Panasonic.
