Good bargain

I bought this lens for a vacation trip to New York City, using it on a 650D to complement an 18-135 STM for wide cityscapes.

Subjectively the IQ feels about the same as the 18-135 STM, which should be taken to mean "not L level, but good for the price." Corner resolution is surprisingly good, although vignetting is pretty obvious. IQ appears to be better at the wide end than the tele end.

IS works, AF is silent and fast. Plastic build, but no wobbles in the lens cylinder or the zoom/focus ring. Being small and light, this lens is a cinch to handle, which is a good thing because you will need to switch lenses often--the 18mm tele end is too wide for many types of travel snaps. The older EF-S 10-22mm may be a better option for people who don't like switching lenses.

Unlike with some other lenses, I did not see a noticeable jump in resolution as I stopped down.

One caveat I did not see mentioned in published reviews: This lens is only f/4.5 at exactly 10.0mm. By 10.5mm it is already down to f/5, and f/5.6 by 14mm. Ouch! IS makes up for some of the hurt, but if you are shooting moving subject in the dark, you need to look elsewhere.

-0.5 stars for being even slower than the product name implies. Otherwise, this lens has no non-obvious gotchas. Overall, I'm glad I bought this lens.
