Yes, I think the Lumix 14mm lens is very good. Here is a comparison with similar lenses for other systems:

The Lumix lens wins this comparison.

Re: Panasonic 14mm - why bother with the Leica 15mm ?

Because the 15/1.7 can render like on the left, while the 14/2.5 can only do what is on the right?

Earth shattering difference? No, but the 15/1.7 gives more of a sense of depth and has a more contrasty and saturated rendering of the out of focus areas. This by the way is a bit of a crop of the full field of view just so it is easier to see the differences. You'll want to click to see at full resolution.

The 14/2.5 when bought used or split for a kit at less than $200 is certainly quite a tiny little bargain when compared to the 15/1.7. And if you are going to be shooting stopped down a bit there is little advantage to the 15/1.7 at equal apertures to the 14/2.5 from say F/4 or smaller.

I'm waiting for the 14mm Schneider

otherwise I'm a reluctant WA user, rarely use anything below 25mm, and hence the Panasonic pancake is sufficient for my needs

Re: I'm waiting for the 14mm Schneider

There is nothing wrong with either lenses. It just one lens is better than the other when it comes to low light shots. So if you like to take wide angle shots in low light then the 15mm 1.7 is perfect for you, otherwise get the 14mm 2.5 or the 12-32mm if you not planning on shooting  landmarks at night or a Stegosaurus in the national history mesuem. Both lens do their job well and it's great we now have excellent choice for primes and zooms in the 12 to 45 focal length.
