Canon SX240 HS or Olympus SZ-16?

I'm in the market for a good quality compact camera. Zoom isn't necessary, quality is. I've zeroed down to these two options -

Canon Powershot sx240

Olympus SZ-16

They're both being sold at $200 in my country India so I'm having a tough time deciding between these two. At first I was going with XZ-10 but thats not available anywhere right now.

Suggestions?

Toi bad I was about to recommend you the XZ-10.

If you prefer quality over zoom then I would go for something else than the two cameras you mentioned, a camera with a brighter lens.

Maybe XZ-2 or LX7 but I don't know what's your budget, if budget is not a problem I would wait for GX7.

I really like my SX240. A great all-rounder and my travel camera of choice (when traveling light). With the CHDK you can get access to RAW files from the camera as well.

Here are some shots from Colombia taken with the SX240:

Re: Canon SX240 HS or Olympus SZ-16?

I have an SX240 and have taken some nice shots with it. It's not going to give me DSLR quality but I knew that before I bought it. The biggest difference between the SX240 and SZ-16 is that the SX240 has Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority and Manual modes whereas the SZ-16 does not. The SZ-16 has more scene modes than the SX240. I think the SX240 has just got the edge image quality wise but I don't think there is much between them so I'd say chose one based on how you think you'll use it. If you're the type of person who wants to alter aperture and shutter speed go for the Canon, if you're the type of person who like to use scene modes pick the Olympus.

Thanks for your suggestions guys. Right now I'm aligned towards olympus - maybe because so far I've been reading overall positive reviews about the picture quality of the olys. Another good news is that the SZ-31 MR is low listed for sale at $180 so I have one more option to choose from. Is the 31 better than the 16?

Yes bro it's a pretty bad situation for me considering XZ-10 was on sale a few days back for $170 in India & it was my number one choice but I didn't buy it cuz I had just started looking into cameras and was not sure about whether to get it.

It's so much amazing that a few days back I didn't really knew the terms used in photography like iso, lenses, etc and any camera out there was 'just another camera' for me. Thanks to dpreview, I realized how much valuable it is to own a decent camera.

Consider the Panasonic ZS19

The ZS19 has been my pocket size travel cam the past 3 years and it's a very good shooter with strong IQ. You can find refurbished on Amazon at $100., which is a excellent deal. I'm assuming Amazon ships to India too.

A few from mine below. Full size views best.

I bought a Canon Powershot sx240 hs and I'm very satisfied with it. The features can be increased a lot with CHDK. Now my sx240 have the total power without spending more money with an upper model.
