Re: Canon should discontinue this

I agree. I tried using this lens for video on my 6D and IQ was not good at all

(video tends to bring out the best and worst of all lenses).

Bought a nice fixed F2.8 28mm IS by Canon and the difference was astounding.

I know that fixed lenses are supposed to have much better performance, in general, than

zoom lenses and that the comparison seems unfair, but in this case it was that dramatic.

So yeah, I sold the zoom lens. I preferred quality over convenience.

Is that due to the lower resolution of video?

Yes, if you only intend to shoot at 28mm then by all means purchase a prime lens at that focal length.

However I don't find the center quality of the cheaper older zoom to be all that bad:

This would look fine on a 1.5X crop camera although the edges and the top of the image look pretty bad in full frame.

Yes, video format exposed the lesser qualities of the lens. That's one of the reasons videophiles are obsessed with sharpness. Even though we'll turn it down all the way when recording our footage, we will manually increase it again in PP. So the better sharpness you get natively, without any processing by the camera, will be better in the end.

As you say, the edges were unusable on FF. That was my experience on the 6D.

Another lens i'm surprised is still on the books is the EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM as i thought that the EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM was it's replacement as well as having a more useful wide-end and better IS.

Yeah, but the 15-85 is much more expensive than the 17-85.

17-85 is already off the catalogue in Japan, by the way. But then again, Canon tends to discontinue older models more quickly in Japan than in other markets (we lost the 75-300 a while ago, for example).

Did you not view the linked photo? They're only unusable if you're pixel-peeping or making large prints. Most people don't make large prints. Ever.

This is very acceptable performance for a cheap consumer wide-angle to telephoto zoom lens with old IS. The center performance is excellent so it would be good choice for a crop camera.
