Which Ultra Wide Angle?

I would like a lense with a zoom range wider than my old (and faulty) kit lense, but do not know which one to get. Do I buy a Sigma 10-20, a Tamron 10-24, or save up for something more expensive? Just looking for some advice

Thanks!

No. Get something less expensive!

Go for the Canon EF-S 10-18mm f4.5-5.6 IS STM. Great little lens, better than the ones you mentioned, very light and very affordable.

Re: Canon EF-S 10-18mm f4.5-5.6 IS STM

I am used to buying lenses on ebay, where the canon 10-22, sigma and tamron lenses go for a very similar price to the 10-18, since being a really new lense the 10-18 doesn't have many copies on the market. It's more a question of image quality.

Like I said, the 10-18mm is better in IQ than the two or so (3, there are two different Sigma 10-20mm versions) lenses you mentioned.

So, that is my (good) advice, just go for a new Canon EF-S 10-18mm f4.5-5.6 IS STM. Better and faster AF, better sharpness, lighter, cheaper, IS.

Re: Which Ultra Wide Angle?

I just bought the 10-18 a few days ago. If you go to my flickr page, the last two albums I posted were shot with this lens on a 70d.

The Canon is just a great lens, I am more than happy with mine.

Re: Which Ultra Wide Angle?

I've been debating the same issue and after seeing your images am pretty much sold on the Canon.  I was going to get a Tokina 11-16 or 12-24, but think I'll save some money and buy the Canon instead.

Re: Which Ultra Wide Angle?

The Tokina 11-16 is built well and has the biggest aperture of the ultra wides, but the Canon 10-18 has wider range, STM, and is cheaper. Unless you shoot at night/astronomy, the Canon is probably a better choice.

I'm going to my closest camera shop and taking a look today.  I'm pretty sure it's the one for me.  Can't beat the price and it has been getting really good reviews.  Thanks

A good read comparing the 10-18 and the 10-22. Flare is usually mentioned in the 10-18 reviews.

Re: Which Ultra Wide Angle?

I have an EF-S 10-22; but if I didn't, & was shopping for one now, it would be the new EF-S10-18.

At 1/2 the price of the 10-22, equal image quality, & IS to boot; for me it would be a "no brainer".

Re: Which Ultra Wide Angle?

I waited paciently for this lens to arrive at Henrys where I live. Canon Canada does not even list it on their estore site yet. Would have liked to have got it before all my camping trips this summer but fall colours will be here soon and then Punta Cana in November so it will be getting a real workout:)

But which one has best image quality?

The new 10-18mm is a great lens, I use it on my Blackmagic 4K Camera and it's just fantastic, IS is certainly a bonus if you do any video.

Re: Which Ultra Wide Angle?

I've had the 10-18 for two days now and love it.  I miss the distance indicator for DOF, but other than that I think it's great.  It's as sharp as my 15-85mm seems to be

Re: Which Ultra Wide Angle?

My vote goes to the Tokina 11-16. Well built, superb IQ, fast aperture, can't fault it. If you don't care about the f/2.8 then the Canon 10-18mm is prob best overall deal with the price.

Well, very strong CA, very bad trying to focus with live view contrast detect AF. That is two faults

I tend to use manual for landscape shots so I can't comment on the live view AF, but CA has hardly ever been a problem. Certainly no more than any other lens I own.
