Pancake Zoom fpr E-PM2

I want to get either the Olympus 14-42 EZ or the Panasonic PZ 14-42 for my Olympus E-PM2. It will be used as a pocketable camera, so I don't want a larger zoom.

Is there any disadvantage to the Panasonic zoom? Will the IQ be similar beyween the 2? Are there any issues that I need to consider between the Panasonic and The Olympus on the E-PM2?

Thanks

I have the panasonic zoom, and the photos were not sharp and there was a lot of purple fringing. The Olympus 14-42 II R has much higher image quality.

Sigala1,

Thanks for the info, but I was looking at one of the pancake zooms. I just wanted to know if there was a disadvantage to using the Panasonic PZ instead of the Olympus EZ on the E-PM2.

IMO the Panny 14-42mm power zoom sucks. I absolutely hated the power zoom feature, and my copy just wasn't up to the standards of the other kit zooms. It's also sort of bulky, in a wide-chunky kind of way.

On the other hand, the Panny 12-32mm minizoom is one of my very favorite lenses. I've added the auto-lens cap from the Oly 14-42mmEZ, which works perfectly, and it's an absolute dream. It would be the cat's meow on the PM2, just like it is on the GM1.

The only reason to go for one of the 14-42mm zooms would be if you absolutely, positively had to have more reach than 32mm. But for me--and I'd guess for many shooters--the advantage of having 12-13 mm more than outweighs the disadvantage of having 32-42mm. Maybe you shoot differently.

+1 on the 12-32

I have no experience with the Oly 14-42 EZ.  I did try the Pany 14-42 PZ and was disappointed in the images. I also disliked the power zoom.

I use the 12-32 on my E-PM2 with good results.  I have Lens IS priority ON as I think the Pany OIS is a bit better than the limited IBIS in the E-PM2 (not the case with E-M5 or E-M1).

It is not a pancake but it is certainly compact and I have been pleased with the results.  I agree that I would gladly trade the 32 to 42 focal lengths to have the extra width of 12 vs 14 mm.

My advice: skip the pancake zooms and get the 12-32.
