Re: 3D Ponderings about - Sony DSC-QX10, DSC-QX30, DSC-QX100 and ILCE-QX1

Ok, I have never held a qx1 in my hands but after extensive research I think this is how it works. With the camera in single connection wifi you can connect it to a phone, or if you wish an LVR1 or LVR2 (the watch like remote Sony sells) you can adjust any and all settings on that particular camera. You can go to wifi settings, and then choose the other camera and log into it and then make whatever changes you want. The Sony Playmemories App does seems to support multiple cameras, BUT that appears to only apply to some actioncams.
Switch both cameras into the multi-cam wifi mode and you can log into both of them at once using the LVR2 (and I think LVR1) and you can toggle between both cameras pretty quickly, seeing the live feed on the little screen. When you hit record, both cameras take a picture. BUT you can make preciousl little other changes. Can't change ISO, WB, etc.
Annoying.
Anyway here is one way I think it could work. Use older mechanical lenses which require manual iris and focus. Set up camera in either full auto exposure and WB or pick your WB and auto shutter speed using your phone. Log out of that camera, log into the other. Match the settings. Switch cameras to multi cam wifi. Put your phone away and hope you picked good settings. Log into both cams using LVR2. Manually adjust iris to whatever stop you wish. Ideally shutter adjusts accordingly. Match iris on other lens. Toggle between views on LVR make sure looks mostly ok. Manually pick your focus. Match on other lens. Problem is you are looking at small screen to judge. When ready, take picture hitting rec/shutter button on LVR.
Alternate method. Modify a tethered shutter release (model escapes me at moment but connects via the USB.) Make it a Y connector and isolate the cameras from each other with electro optical bit to be safe. When you push the button you fire both shutters. Keep it connected. Log into one camera with your phone. Make setting changes. Log out, log into other camera. Match settings. LEAVE phone connected to 2nd camera and use it as monitor to judge focus and other elements. Match focus and iris on both camera lenses. Hope there isn't something you missed on the first camera. Trigger shutters with remote.
Makes my old medium Format Sputnik not look so fiddly after all.

Please anyone weigh in on practical experience that differs or have insight on how it might be easier.

One last thing- manual trigger port on cam body is not micro USB but Multi Terminal which has additional pinouts for focus and shutter. It should be possible to get two cables and wire it to a DPST (double pole single throw) switch to trigger both cameras simultaneously.

I have made 3D camera rigs with the QX1. The camera modules (up to 5) can be controlled by wifi simultaneously with a special remote (watch) but this is NOT synchronous! However, you can connect both modules through their multi-terminal connector directly by wire. Camera settings have to be made by wifi (iPhone, iPad) before. I use my old iPhone as a 4 inch screen connected by wifi to one of the modules. You just press the button on the side of one of the modules and there you are ... a 3D picture. With 16-50mm (24-75mm equivalent) lenses attached you can get a stereobase better then the W3. And of course the APS-C quality blows the W3 out of the water

QX1 3D rig with 10mm Samyang (15mm equivalent) lenses attached. This results in an equivalent stereo base of less then 5cm meaning that you can get closer then 1.5 meter to the closest object in your picture (in accordance with the 1:30 rule for decent projection on large screens).

Did you measure the shutter-release synchronization accuracy?

From my experience, QX1 has somewhat unstable shutter delay - when using remote terminal.

No, I did not measure the synchronicity of the QX1 set. I believe however that the synchronicity of the wired A5000 and A6000 sets is (much) better. So, you might be right.

For the A5000 I do have measurement results. They have been published in several Stereoscopic club magazines (NL, GE, UK).

Measurements for Sony Alpha A5000. In A-mode (fixed aperture) we found that 85 out of 100 pictures had a exposure difference of 2 milliseconds (1/500) or less. 80 were even better than 1 ms. In S-mode (fixed shutter) the results were 92 and 68. In P-mode (program) the results were 93 and 78. In the “intelligent mode” the results were 96 and 83. In M-mode (manually fixed aperture, speed and ISO) the results were 94 and 75. As these figures show (much to our surprise) the “intelligent mode” gave the best results. The tests also made clear that there was no notable difference between shooting a sequence or a single picture after a new start up. Stereo Data Maker (SDM) may still be the most synchronous solution for twinning but the test results of the A5000 set were not disappointing to me.

Hello,

did anyone some more Synchro-Tests with the A6000 so far?

Regards, Jörg

What cable did you use for the connection of the A5000 / A6000?

Hi Turbguy am very interested in this project which you put together I have two QX10’s and one QX 100 s and I'm really keen Using them like you have to capture objects in 3-D. It would be really nice if you could help me out!

Kind regards Sam

I used to sync A5000 with QX1; it required delay timer for the former. The QX1 fires after some variable delay; the shortest usable shutter speed we achieved was 1/80sec.

I only have experience with the QX1. They can easily be connected by putting a cable between the two multiterminal ports. Sony even has a cable now which can do that. It is the VMC-MM2. It is not cheap but of good quality.
