I own an E-M1.. I would say the ISO 3200 images are just barely usable, but not good enough for print and definitely not commercial use of any sort. ISO 2500 is the acceptable max for me. Once you go past ISO 1600, there is a steady increase in noise, so I've set my Auto ISO to 2500, FWIW.

You must be joking, I have E-M1, and I have set auto ISO to 6400. ISO 3200 is perfectly usable, I'm not even hesitating using ISO 6400 or 8000 on this camera, it's not like E-3 and E-5 where one had banding all over the shadow area.

Printing will melt away some noise too

Thanks! Did you do some noise reduction on these?

Iso 8000 shot : 16 Luminance NR in LR5.6

Iso 3200 shot : 0 Luminance NR in LR5.6

Iso 5000 shot : 55 Luminance NR in LR5.6

The few times I've printed high ISO pictures, if there was a little noise, it melted away.

Larger amounts of noise can be hidden with grain or converting to B&W allowing for even higher ISO pictures.

Those are 3 get shots and the one at ISO5000 is an excellent example.

Particularly, examples of the newer 16mp sensors at ISO 3200 would be useful.

An extreme example, taken with the 75-300mm MKII . :))

Thanks everyone for posting such great examples! Very generous of you to do this. While there are examples on this site they are quite technical and dry compared to these shots.

For the most part things look good, although I will take a hit coming from Fuji in this area. However, there would be many advantages to M43 too, including AF, less expensive but great lenses, IBIS, lens size, and a traditional Bayer sensor rather than x-trans (advantage to me, at least).

Here's the Panasonic GX7 at ISO 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200, 6400, 12800, and 25600:

Each stripe includes some fine detail and some blank area. There are two strips that were worked on with Topaz DeNoise at various settings. I hope it's self-explanatory. The image is the full resolution of the sensor.

This is a completely untouched ISO 3200 file. No sharpening, NR, exposure adjustment, nothing.
