*** Mini Challenge #349, HIGH CONTRAST B&W (other)***

I loved high contrast film and paper in the old days, and played with rx100's High Contrast Black and White for a while, liked what it can do. Other forms of high contrast are good, black and white is not a requirement.

So, what's out there, or, find the settings in your new gizmo or PP and take some new shots.

__________ RULES __________

1. Enter photos: 'Entry' to Win, or 'Exhibition' to Show.

2. Entries to Win: up to 3 Shots.

3. Exhibitions to Show: are encouraged and unlimited. Put the word Exhibition in the Header of your post if you do not want to be chosen as the next host. If you post more than 3 photos, label entries and exhibitions clearly. If you leave shots unlabeled, the first three in your post will be eligible to be chosen as winners.

4. Photos from any camera taken at any time. Also encouraged (not required): a title, a story, description of conditions, settings, post processing, etc. so we can all learn what works and what doesn't.

5. Submitting photos: for clarity, it is best to reply to this original post, (rather than under someone else’s post), and to change the subject line of your post to suit your images.

I'M TIRED OF RULE 5, IT IS A PAIN TO GO BACK TO OP, expecially on multi page challenges,  (any support to delete it, and then we just reply to any post, making it easier?)

6. Comments on other people's photos definitely add to the fun, the comments may be the best prize.

7. Host will select and announce the winners at the end date. 1st, 2nd, 3rd Place winners will be chosen, (as well as some honorable mentions if the host wants to).

8. 1st Place Winner Hosts the next Mini-Challenge. Pick a theme; start a new thread; give a description and some samples of what you have in mind; copy and paste, change the end date (and tweak the rules a little bit if you wish).

9. 2nd Place Winner becomes the host if the 1st place winner requests that for any reason.

__________ End of Rules __________

This Challenge runs from now until  Sunday, August 31st, Noon, Eastern Standard Time (NYC, my time zone).

Nice challenge theme, Elliott.

Not sure if this is high contrast, but it is black and white, mostly. (After seeing your examples, nope, it ain't high contrast.}

I'm not sure about high contrast.  They say that makes Black and White more powerful, but I dislike cranking up the contrast and losing detail in the shadow and highlight ends. So this is kind of a compromise...

(Sorry, I don't follow rule 5.  I put my photos close together.) That the father and the baby's arms were doing the same thing made this shot interesting, also, the mother is a cutie, and some other lines and shapes are repeated.

Nice sample shots Elliott. Here are my shots. All taken in colour, converted to B&W and I then used the "Augment" filter in iPhoto which, I think, increases contrast and saturation.

Statue in Wat Phra Mahathat, Ayutala

Ta Prohm near Angkor too

Alrighty then, nice ones coming in.

If you want to try the rx100 in-camera High Contrast Black and White Picture Effect:

Menu, camera, page 3, bottom line, toggle to 7th down, HC BW.

To get back to normal, go back there, toggle to OFF.

btw, the prior building shot was not that, it was an Auto Exposure Bracketing test, the others were this mode.

Black and White Rose, but warm toned with vignette: used to do this with selenium in the darkroom at International Paints - 50 years ago!

Wish you had saved this challenge subject till June next year, Elliot - my wife's Nostalgia roses are in second flush now and the blooms have only a hint of the drama of the first ones of the year. I've done everything I can in post-processing to subdue the background to these startling crimson and white miracles but I now realise I should have clipped some leaves and fitted a black velvet cloth behind each flower to catch it to perfection. Ho hum, there's always next year...

A rose is a rose, is a Wonderful photo Ed.

Perhaps you should win the challenge, defer the right to start a new challenge till June next year, and just jump in then when ready with Mini Challenge #____ - A.

If you like the plan, send me a private message, I have some sway with the judges.

Wonder how much you could darken shadows and keep white bike jumping out

Like Harvey's, I might crop the bottom of your top shot, and mess with the levels, and I look for abstracts, and I see you have an alligator biting a rock.

Pretty. At this point, John, I formally request a chronological photo essay of your women, identifying whether past or current girl friend or friend or stranger!!! Others join in this request?
