What would be the better macro lens than XF 60mm?

I was stuck at home over the weekend. We've been having ant attack due to warm and dry weather outside.

I tried to take some macro pictures using X-E1 and XF 60mm. However, I could not get the object to fill the frame. I had to heavily crop the pictures.

I am wondering if there is anything I can do to take better macro pictures with my X body.

Thanks.

I have the 50mm f2.8 Zeiss Touit.

It is an awesome lens and will give you 1:1 macro.

Here is a thread of mine re this lens.

You can also used extension tubes with existing lens.

Here is another post fo mine on extension tubes.

Re: What would be the better macro lens than XF 60mm?

Hi Trevor,

Thanks very much. I will look into this lens. I used a speedlight (off camera) for the shot but XF 60mm seems unable to get close enough.

Thanks!

There are several things that you can do. The first is to get almost any macro lens for Canon or Nikon cameras and a lens adapter for it. You'll have to focus it manually but many macro photographers focus manually anyway even when the use autofocus lenses.

A much less expensive solution is to buy a set of extension tubes for Fuji's X mount. If you search Amazon you'll find many brands of tubes such as Fotodiox, Fotasy, Fotga, Neewer, Viltrox and others. They typically include 2 or 3 different size tubes and can be stacked together in different combination where the greater the tube length the greater the magnification.

The most expensive sets cost between $40 and $50. Fotodiox has one for $45 and another for $10. The $45 version includes a 10mm and a 16mm tube and claims to allow autofocusing but with the extreme magnification that the tubes allow, the depth of field is so razor thin that you'd probably be better off putting the camera on an adjustable rail that's mounted on a good tripod. The $10 version includes 3 tubes, 7mm, 14mm and 28mm.

Re: What would be the better macro lens than XF 60mm?

The 60 is a superb lens but it does lack 1:1. I currently have a Zeiss 50mm that I borrowed. That is the only dedicated 1:1 macro lens for X-mount that I know of. IQ is excellent, but the lens is very frustrating largley due to the lack of working distance and also the lack of markings. My preferred option until a longer 1:1 becomes available is to use my old Nikon macros with an adapter. I have the older version of the Nikon 60 and a Tmaron 90. I use the older versions because they have aperture rings which means I can use an adapter that doesn't have one, and I can use a Nikon extention tube to go beyond 1:1.

I would take a look at one of the Tamron 90 macro lenses. The f2.5 is excellent and available at very low prices these days ...   You don't need AF, just a good tripod.

With the 60mm I use 2 sets of Viltrox macro extension tubes to get 1:1 ratio

A nother way is the Tamron 90mmwith adatall to fx adapter with manual ext tubes

Re: What would be the better macro lens than XF 60mm?

You could also add the Raynox DC-250, or any other quality close-up lens, to the front of the 60mm. You do not lose light as you would with extension tubes or have the worry over poor contacts. The Raynox enables you to get > 1:1.

I plan on using a Tamron Adaptall 90mm 1:1 macro with an adapter.

I found it for sale used for about $130 and man it's a sharp lens. It's not very big either.

I'll second that idea - I bought a Fuji FX to Adaptall-2 adapter and it works great with all my Tamron SP Adaptall lenses, including the excellent telephotos.

Re: What would be the better macro lens than XF 60mm?

Non-Fuji optimised lenses are likely to get a big resolution drop due to the properties of the thickness of the glass in front of the sensor. Don't ask me why, but it's true .

You might be better off with just the heavy cropping.

Otherwise rent the Touit 50/2.8 1:1 macro.

try an extension tube. I use an el cheapo 16mm extension tube (with autofocus) with the Fuji 35mm f 1.4 and am able to get this close (see full size). I bet it would be awesome on the 60mm.

In that article you linked he said using a Canon or Nikon lens on a NEX or Fuji should not be any different as the Sensor Stack Thickness is basically the same.

I have great luck using an old 90mm Macro lens for Canon FD mount. No resolution loss.

I missed another trick which is that the sensor stack issue mostly affects wide-angles not these longer lenses.
