Splitscreen for 1000D arrived-with no instructions

I received a cheap splitscreen for 1000D with two finger-condoms and two tools. But no instructions how to replace the existing screen. What will happen with the four focussing points(in a row)?

will the red lights still flash?

I oculd imagine that using this split-aid is only suitable with the help of a rightangle-loupe 3.5x.

Re: Splitscreen for 1000D arrived-with no instructions

Ask the seller about the focusing lights. They either don't work at all or everything works except the center point (best case scenario) I'd actually advise getting it installed at a Camera service center in your area. Sometimes if you bring in the focus screen itself, they might even do this complimentary or for a very small fee. Anyway, they've got much better installation tools.

Make sure to test the screen with a slow lens like the kit lens at 55mm f/5.6 for example. It might not be worth it over the original.

dont understand. It migh not be worth it over the original.

2. regaring the focussing lights. I have found this here:

http://www.katzeyeoptics.com/page--Grid-Lines-Crop-Guides--gridlines.html

under 1000d they say:

Canon® 350D/1000D AF Rectangles

The standard KatzEye™ focusing screens for the Canon 350D and 1000D do not include the rectangles which mark the locations of the AF points. If you want the AF rectangles, please select this option when you add your screen to the cart. This pattern is only available on the Canon 350D (Rebel XT/Kiss Digital N) and Canon 1000D (Rebel XS) cameras, and as noted in the product description, addition of this option will still not allow the AF points to illuminate.

if the lights are not illumination only sound and green-dot is a reference and i still dont know where it is focussing.

i cannot imagine that with this little split-screen-center-area(compared to SLR) i can properly focus without a right-angle-3.5x viewfinder.

btw: why the screen-producers do not offer the genious praktica/pentacon double-split-microprism-screen? is there still a patent?

what has the make(model) to do with illumination or non-illumination on 1000D. How is it blocked?

Split prism focus aid works best with large aperture lenses.  With smaller maximum apertures of f/4 to f/5.6 the split prism tends to go dark and may not be usable.

You can still manually select the active focus sensor instead of leaving the camera set to auto selection.

?  Not sure why you want to bother with a right angle viewer instead of using the 1000D's Live View and 5x/10x magnification for focusing.

Re: 'might not be worth it'

Sorry I didn't explain "might not be worth it". Lemming explained it pretty well. Regarding the focus confirm lights.. I think the focusing screen actually needs special etching in order to catch whatever contraption is emitting the red lights. Without the etchings... they don't show.

Whatever you want to do.. make sure to save the original screen and keep it in good condition if the split-prism FS doesn't work out for you. Since f/5.6 is really the smallest max aperture we're usually going to see through the viewfinder with our cameras, (I guess we could count DOP button, but usually we don't focus with that). please make sure to test the viewfinder with this. Just twist the kit lens to 55mm and look through the viewfinder.

Re: 'might not be worth it'

This no-namescreen has the exact shape like the katzeye. So i will definitively see the lights.

Since i have manual-lenses i dont need to get the kitlens. ok i have older ones. we say here "Flaschenböden".

Re: 'might not be worth it'

Ok on your manual lenses, are any very slow... like f/5.6?

Re: 'might not be worth it'

300/5.6 mirror(not so spectacular a big low contrast) and 400/5.6 novoflex follow focus.
