Very good, but...

Re: Very good, but...

I am relieved there will be plastic barrels going forwards with M lenses. The metal barrels are as solid as coke cans, and a single drop will cause plastic deformation even of the focus ring, which is thicker. The anodized finish is also super smooth and difficult to grip on to.

I much prefer the usual lens build (cf EF 40/2.8) because it is far more robust, has an unbelievably smooth focus ring action, and easy to grip.

yikes.. i was comfortable with the plastic mount but i don't like that it's ALL plasticky.. esp at 3x the cost of the 55-250.

really? you can get the 55-250 IS STM for 125?

not the STM.

okay .. so you are looking at a lens that isn't even currently being produced and is being dumped off and using that as a comparison.

right.

Of course the ISII is a reasonable comparison. Who cares if it is currently being produced? It is a good lens and a bargain.

Are you sure it isn't being made? Canon is so big they have product segmentation even in the kit lenses.

well okay, then .. 45000 Yen for the EF-S 55-250 IS II a few months after it was released as well, which works out to around 47,500 yen in today's yen inflation rate.

the original - EF-S 55-250mm IS was also 45,000 yen.

again - not much different.

street value / price means nothing to what the lens comes out as far as as retail price. you will find that canon is pretty consistent with it's yen pricing from release to release.

so there you have it:

EF-S 55-250mm IS - 45000Y (47000Y today)
EF-S 55-250mm IS II - 45000Y (47500Y today)
EF-M 55-200mm IS STM - 49000Y
EF-S 55-250mm IS STM - 50000Y

(btw, 2000Y is around 20 bucks)

Good info. Canon's DSLR lens sales are so large that one way or another (unbundled kits, end of life discounts) the DSLR kit lenses can eventually be bought cheap. On the other hand M sales are so low and lens introductions so slow that it might be years before the new EF-M 55-200 goes for much less than $400.

hard to say, the EF-M kit lenses are already sold for cheap, but yes, i see the 11-22 and 55-200 as being limited run lenses that really are not mass produced - so the price would not drop down as quickly.

Just in case if someone wants to see this lens' performance wide open at its both 55 and 200mm end (including its IS, all pics were taken handheld):

Thanks. In my eyes it looks good enough, especially handheld.

Used ISII's are widely available and I got mine for under $90. It does not focus well on the EOS-M+adapter, but the EOS-M isn't exactly a speed demon itself. It'll do fine for non tracking shots. EF-M at more than 3x the price doesn't seem worth it. In fact I'd rather get the EF-S STM despite its larger size. It costs less with USA warranty, can be used on DSLRs, and is probably easier to resell. If the EF-M cost less and were actually legitimately sold in the USA, I'd consider it a lot more strongly.

The 55-250STM on the M via adapter is a bit of a rocket.

Yeah but the EOS M itself is able to get a whopping one good shot off if asked to track... it doesn't really AF-track is the point I'm making.  Presumably an EOS M3 will have an EVF for stability and be on par with the A6000, plus have articulated touchscreen. That would be awesome and really unleash lenses like the EF-S/EF-M STM lenses even in AF-C mode.

It does vary by lens. This guy on a bike wasn't moving fast but the 55-200 performed better than I expected

Hmm good to know. Maybe I will pony up. Nah, still gonna wait to see if there will be a good EOS M3 or not. If not, I'll get the EF-S STM version.

I didn't really add points for the very thin metallic cosmetics on the other lenses, so AFAIC there's nothing to deduct here.

Fortunately, they all have such a great performance / size / price point, getting one's money's worth in terms of fun & keeper shots is easy.
