Nikon 24-120 F4 or Tamron 24-70 vc 2.8

Hi

I am a wedding photographer and i'm about to purchase the Nikon D810 this week.

I have the 50 1.8 and 85 1.8 (both g) and i want to buy another FX lens.

I have an hard time to decide what lens to buy and as now i consider 2 lenses:

1. Nikon 24-120 F4

2. Tamron 24-70 2.8 VC

at the begining i was thinking about the tamron but i saw that this lens isn't sharp at 2.8 (wide open)  but it still has 2.8 aperture so i need your help please.

Thanks

I'd say that you need something longer than 120mm. Look at a Nikon 70-200 f4 VR FX lens. I'm wanting one real bad and will use it hopefully for my next wedding shoot.

I have used a 24-120 f4 for a month, it is a great lens.  Ignore the Ken Rockwell review, my experience confirms everything in the Mansurov review.

I had the Tamron for two weeks but ended up selling it due to AF & front element issues. I did send in for repair, but I questioned it's long term durability, so I sold it.

I just re-purchased the 24-120 f4 for $800 in mint condition via Amazon marketplace. Great walkaround/vaca lens. I use this and my 70-200 2.8VR most of the time.

I've shot a bunch of events with the Nikon 24-120 f4 VR on my D800 including poorly lit churches.  It is a great lens.  Mine is sharp at all focal lengths and even wide open.  I found that with the great high ISO capabilities of the D800 sensor, I don't miss f2.8.  The focal range on this lens is super useful in practical shooting.  Highly recommended.

You've had some good responses already. The traditional wisdom would be that the 2.8 lens is the one to get for the type of shooting you're talking about. If you would mostly be shooting with flash, there isn't much, if any, difference in IQ between the two (I've tested the Nikon 24-70 against the 24-120 in this type of scenario). f/2.8 isn't really fast enough for available light work anyway, so I don't think you would be at much of a disadvantage with the f4 lens. The one thing that would be less effective is subject isolation because of the f4 max aperture. Whether that matters will depend on your shooting style.

Although I am a D300s shooter, I had similar dilemma and I decided for Nikkor. Very glad by the IQ and flexibility of the lens. The VR is great, also.

D810 has approximately the same pixel density than D300s, so I would expect the same IQ.

All the best,

I love my Nikkor 24-120 f/4.0 lens. Used it for several of my Harper's BAZAAR and ELLE photo shoots.

Re: Nikon 24-120 F4 or Tamron 24-70 vc 2.8

I use both the 24-120 and the 24-70 for weddings.  Each has their own merits.  For the Tamron, I have never owned a Tamron lens so I can't help you.  I steer clear of those brands for wedding work with core gear as the Nikon gear is more durable - in most cases.  I would purchase a specialized off-brand lens with no reservation.

The 24-70 with the 2.8 will give you better subject isolation and bokeh for things like bride dressing photos, B&G shots both indoor and outdoor, and church shots. The F4 of the 24-120 is great for group shots, family photos, outdoor shots, and reception photos.  I do find the 24-70 to be a little more constrasty and the F4 to be smoother overall.  I cant quantify that, but to my eye, that is my opinion.  At least with my copy of the 24-70.

Good luck with your choice.

Not sure the sound indicates a problem but I know my D750 + 24-120 f4 does not make that sound.

Hi

I do have both. For my business travel, the 24-120 is very versatile and gives a good tele range too. The 24-70 I use in studio and for shootings where I going to play with f2.8.

I got 75% the 24-120 in use and 25% the 24-70.

The AF is more silent on the 24-70 which makes it a bit better for video. The IS is comparable.

Cheers

Does your copy of 24-120 f4 underexposes by 1/2 to 2/3 stop? Mine does, is this normal?

Not mine.  Exposure is the same as the Tamron 24-70, which I also have, and several other lenses I use.

Have you compared yours to other lenses?

I compared mine with 85mm 1.8g and Tamron 17-50 2.8 on a D7100, there is a 2/3 exposure difference, the 24-120 f4 being the underexposed. Saw many cases from different forums regarding this issue, just want to confirm if all copies are affected
