Red glow?

I have a Canon Power Shot Elph 310HS. I want to shoot a picture of the edge of a drawer but every time I press the button I get a red glow in the middle of the screen and the picture just will not take. Anyone know what's going on here? I tried taking a test picture of something farther away and that was okay. I don't see anything change on the screen and the battery is freshly charged.

Perhaps it is the focus assist beam. It must be too dark and your camera will not focus and therefore will not take the picture.

What mode are you shooting in? Auto?

Will the camera work in good light?

If it is close you will need to change it to macro focus mode, the other thing could be that if it is too dark the focus assist lamp may be coming on and reflecting back.  Two things here, first the focus assist lamp will turn off if it shoots, but it probably won't shoot because it is close and needs macro mode to focus.

The camera is set at auto and does work at other times.

I will try macro mode. I wondered if it might have something to do with the fact that there was bright light coming in from a window right near the dresser. Lighting is indeed poor in this room even with the light on.
