Great street lens
1

It's a very nice lens. Accurate and very sharp. I love it as my every day street photography default lens. The only one thing which disappoint me - Canon doesn't provide lens hood for this lens. Original price of this lens was around $[*]. Now it's $[*]0 and no Lens Hood? Of course you can buy it separately for almost $60 which is ridiculous to pay $[*] for a lens and then extra 60 for a piece of plastic which should come with it by default. It's like buying a lens without front and rear cap. SMH Canon Fail! I had my doubts about this lens first - since it is my first non-L lens. And usually Canon non-L lenses are very plastic and cheap. But this lens feels solid - not as solid as Zeiss 35 Distagon all metal tanks, but still very solid, nice round bokeh, smooth focusing ring.

Re: Great street lens

It is possibly Canon's best all-around prime lens. On par with the 35L from f/2 and beyond. "Nearly flawless" another forum member called it. Good stuff.

I also have, and love this lens. Its a lens that can keep up (or is it the other way around) with IQ from my 24-70 f/2.8 MKII. Its the lens i tend ot take ot and from work (on my 5D3) most days.

Not sure why anyone is surprised it doeskin come with a hood, most, if not all non L lenses dont.

It would be nice if the did though.

There are some perfectly usable 3rd party versions for around. Mine cost £12 and has no flaws in it, it even has the locking clip.

Re: Great street lens

For street photography I've had a lot of fun with the 40mm 2.8 on a 6D.

The 40mm f2.8 pancake doesn't interest me, due to lack of IS. Also, the recent 35mm IS has a faster aperture. YMMV.

Ive got both, and IME the AF on the 40mm lacks the speed of a decent USM lens.

Although i don't do much street stuff (not in the traditional sense) ive missed shots with my 40mm due to the slower AF, and this is on a 5DMKIII.

Fun little lens though, but since getting my 35mm ive only used it once or twice, and only when ive needed the smallest size i can get on my 650D.

Re: Great street lens

I bought the 35IS, sold the 40STM, and then just recently bought it again. Optically it is excellent, at least on par with the 35IS.

I would be surprised if Canon actually included a lens hood with this lens. most if not all None-L Canon lens doesn't come with lens hood, I wouldn't expect anything different on this, oh, it doesn't come with a soft lens carrying pouch either, that's why I refused to buy this lens. LOL.

If you buy it refurbished from Canon, you'll notice on the website that it says "lens case" under "what's in the box".  When I bought mine, it wasn't shipped with one but I called back and spoke with someone and they had one shipped to me right away.

Honestly, I'll probably never use it but if it's "free" (ie, supposed to be included according to the listing) then I'll take it!
