Olympus 12mm f/2.0 "special edition" owners - how do you feel about the new version?

Hello campers,

According to 43 Rumours, Olympus will announce a new black version of the M. Zuiko 12mm f/2.0 lens that will sell at the same price as the usual silver one.

I wonder how owners of the black "Special Edition" feel about this, given that they paid a premium of several hundred dollars to own a black version of the lens (albeit with a protective filter and a hood thrown in the box), only to find it re-launched at a cheaper price.

Personally, I would be a bit grumpy if I were in that boat.

I am glad to hear this. I thought Oly was making a mistake by not offering the 12mm in black.

I recently purchased another E-M10 body and had the chance to get more lenses at the bundled price. I could have bought a silver 12mm for $600 or a black 12mm for $1200. Anyone who would pay $600 for a filter and hood has more dollars than sense (IMO). The resale value on the special edition 12mm just dropped by a few hundred dollars with this announcement.

When Amazon UK sold the special edition for the same price as the silver one I alerted the forum and more than one person here bought it at that price.

I would feel pretty peeved if I bought the limited edition (I didn't - I went for the silver version).

Hopefully camera companies are beginning to understand the stupidity of charging more for a different finish on already super-high margin products (e.g., the Fuji X100 limited edition and their change of heart on the X100S).

I feel quite good that I unloaded mine a few months back, and used the money to get a second G6 and a Panasonic 12-35. Looking back on it, it was a wise move on my part. I love the flexibility of having two cameras, and the 12-35 is an awesome lens.

If I still owned it though, I'd be pretty p*ssed at Olympus. It was an idiotic move on their part to begin with, making it a "limited edition", but to now offer the same thing but at 2/3's of the cost, I believe people have a good reason to be upset.

I would buy one since it's bigger than the silver one, LOL. No I like the way the silver lenses look on my black GX7 & E-P3. But Olympus should of been selling all these lenses in black & silver from the very beginning. They also should of came with lens hood, but that's a different topic.

They were selling the special edition 12mm lens for $1200!!!!! I never paid attention to the price and IMO that was a mugging of their loyal customers. But at least you got a hood.

So far, that's a rumour.

But I wouldn't be surprised to see it becoming a reality. It was daft in the first place to make it a limited edition.

More importantly though, whether it's silver, black or garish flashy green, I'd like to have the assurance that if I buy it, I won't get a lemon like this : http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3667318?page=1

On a related topic, what is it with Olympus to have two versions of silver bodies and lenses - a true silver (EPM1, 45mm f1.8 and a "champagne" colour EPL5 and 75mm f1.8)?

How silly is that???

Possibly because they couldn't make the same colour on different materials ?

I'm in the proverbial boat, and I am a bit grumpy. The good news is I got mine secondhand, and happened to find it from an Australian seller while there was a decent conversion rate. So, I only paid approx. what one would pay for a new silver 12mm + hood + metal cap + filter. That being said, I imagine the resale value of my lens fell by about 20~30% "overnight" so I'm not too pleased about that.

Oh well, them's the breaks.

P.S. - What principally drove me towards black was the difference in silver (E-M10) vs. the apparent champagne color of the lenses (12mm/75mm).

It was an act of considerable kindness on your part. I was among those who bought on your recommendation. I've enjoyed owning it, and if it's true that a non-limited 12mm black lens is imminent, the fact that I paid the standard price will make me feel a lot better about the new variant. Had I bought at the premium price, I would be somewhat miffed.

Hardly.

Besides, what is different between the materials used in the EPM1 body vs the EPL5 body?

It is just silly nonsense.

If my black 12mm was an investment I'd be miffed.  But it's not an investment, it's a tool.  That being said, I got a great deal on it to begin with, and I've used it plenty of times since it's purchase.  I would not have those images if I had waited to purchase...

You know a camera company lacks a decent spread of lenses when a colour change is the talk of the town...

I was willing to pay the extra price at the time and it wasn't $1,200 but still substantially more. But as I intended to keep mine forever I might as well buy the one I really wanted. Resale price was never an issue. You could buy an after market hood for the silver version for a whole lot less than the oem black one. I don't know what the after market hood quality was but a hood is a hood and the oem price was extortion just short of a gun and a mask. However if you accept that highway robbery happens the "free" gift of an oem hood and a filter allowed some personal rationalising of the price.

But we have to be philosophical. If the black special edition was too much at the time and you bought the silver one as a cheapskate you might be equally miffed that you will now be able to buy the black one you wanted for the same price as the silver one in your hand. I think that is more miff-worthy than those who paid the extra to get the lens that they truly wanted. So sell off the silver one and buy a black one, the loss on the silver one plus the cost of the reduced price black one will probably be more than buying the black one you wanted in the first place. Or do you need two to match your pair of custom cameras?

And of course you will lose out on the "Special Edition" logo whatever that might mean. Presumably platinum enriched paint? "Rumour" is that they are seconds from the silver lens run air-brushed black, but you would never know except that the coveted "Special Editon" logo is missing. That should get a few anxious guys sweating ...

Meanwhile maybe the new non-Special Edition model might have enhanced firmware to further correct the distortion of the 12mm lens? That would really miff me .... but it might be downloadable ...

How many times can a company run a "special edition" stunt?

Olympus has messed in its own nest if they pull the "special edition, wait a while and it is the same lens without the logo at a reduced price stunt" again.

Don't try the superannuated price for a black lens labelled "Special Edition" trick another time.  It simply will not sell while the punters wait for the price to come down and effectively force it to be sold at "Rough Edition" prices.

Honestly, I go out of my way to choose the silver lenses whenever possible. I guess they remind me of my long-departed L-glass, only without the extra tonnage. I think thy make me look extra classy.

Re: Olympus 12mm f/2.0 "special edition" owners - how do you feel about the new version?

I guess I'm in the minority in that I wouldn't be at all peeved about owning the lens. After all, it's not like Oly held a gun to my head and forced me to by the "limited edition" version.

Also, I don't care if a lens is hot pink with purple polkadots -- the color of the lens has no effect on the pics I take, so who cares what it looks like? I don't care what color my hammer and screwdrivers are, either.
