Olympus primes at Victoria Falls (Zambia / Zimbabwe)

Nothing too spectacular, folks, although I like the colours in the fourth one.

Lenses were the 12/2.0, 17/1.8 and 60/2.8 Macro, all shot on my E-P3.

I viewed the falls from the Zimbabwe side only, as entry was expensive.

The falls were generally impressive, although not a patch on Iguazu Falls on the Argentinian / Brazilian border, which I visited in 2010.

Of the "Big Three", Niarara Falls on the Canada / US border is the only one I am yet to visit, although apparently it is also less impressive than Iguazu.

17/1.8. This could probably do with a contrast boost ...

Jo. 60/2.8 Macro.

12/2.0

12/2.0 with a B+W Kaesemann polariser and a B+W ND 3.0 (a 10-stop neutral-density filter).

12/2.0

17/1.8. Jo crossing Victoria Falls Bridge, between the Zimbabwe and Zambia border posts.

Cool to see Vic Falls again!

It is cool to see it again! I was there twice in 1993 and went whitewater rafting both times. Also, rode an ultralight over the falls. Here is a poor photo of me in the ultralight flying over Vic Falls in 1993.

Nice, needs sound effects to make it "real".

Oh, well, this less travelled Aussie person has visited Niagara three times, does that make up for not visiting the two others?

Falls are great when there's lots of water thundering over and Niagara to me is best when on the little island accessed from the USA side that overlooks the Canadian side of the falls.....

Google does it.

Go to Goat Island and then to Terrapin Point for what I reckon is a good look at the waterfall, the USA fall is a rocky cliff and not so good.

As you say, the colors are outstanding in the 4th…

…and the composition is not bad either!

I also like the 5th -- very unusual composition, although I would like to see the foreground stuff lost.

But 1-3 and 5 all seem to be a bit too light to me.

Cheers, geoff

Of course it is a great place, one I would love to visit someday. But IMO the photos are "weak": especially because the light is so uninteresting, leading to normal photos. Which is fine, of course, they will be a memory of the trip.

I like #4, but the white sky needs to be cropped out.

Impressive falls but I find the pictures washed out - maybe lowering the exposure in post might help.

#1 is 12mm not 17mm,

#5 is 17mm not 12mm.

On the Canadian side of Niagara, you can enter a tunnel & view the Horseshoe falls from the back side.

Yes that might help, but I suspect this is what it looks like in situ.

Mosi oa Tunya The smoke that roars

Thanks for the series which brought backs some good memories of a visit there in the late '70s when I was doing some work in Zambia.  In those days the Rhodesian Bush War was active after the first (Universal) Declaration of Independence (UDI) was declared since the more famous Declaration of 1776.

Thus Zambia was in a constant state of war with its southern neighbour and the famed rail/auto/pedestrian bridge was closed ... at least during the day when belligerents used to wave weapons at each other ... and worse.  At night important rail traffic was moved.

Since I visited from the Zambian side, these views are new to me.   I did see the famed "smoke" rising above the falls when on approach to the Livingstone Airport .   I enjoyed some Mosi Lager at the resort and did swim in the famous "Devils Pool" ... a scary experience, probably helped by the Mosi.

Potential visitors might check this heavily illustrated site as an aid to the decision of which side to see the Falls from.

That is in fact the problem - there was mist everywhere, and it was like shooting through fog.

This is what I was thinking of in terms of lightness

Well, roughly. I just shifted the middle point of the histrogram over to the right. Obviously it needs more refined work.

Cheers, geoff

Re: Olympus primes at Victoria Falls (Zambia / Zimbabwe)

I agree with Geoff that the long exposure shot is the best and that the other shots of the falls seem too light (lacking in contrast).

Oddly, the first two shots with the rainbow effects seem less impactful because of the accompanying white out effect.

I imagine the bright light conditions contributed to the results.

I'm sure it was still a grand sight to see.

Regards

Michael

Nice work, Geoff.

Maybe I'll have another crack at processing them.

Yeah, the whitewater rafting there can be pretty rough.  When I did it there were several class 5 rapids and lots of class 4 and 3 rapids.  There was a class 6, but for that one we ported around it.  We flew up in the air and flipped over in a class 5, I think it was called the Devil's Washing Machine or something like that.  Flipped over another time too.  A woman broke her arm.  Pretty wild.

Of course, with the 16MPX sensor…

NZ Scott wrote:

Of course, there is no question that with the 16MPS sensor you would have a significantly better DR available.

When using the E-PL3 I found quite a few circumstances where I just could not get the shadow and highlight detail I wanted in the kind of bright, hard light you get in Africa and Australia. In general, it is better in the wet tropics -- the high humidity means there is a bit of light bouncing around.

Of course, with the subject you had here, there was quite a bit of light bouncing around! LOL.

Cheers, geoff
